"People who say food is overpriced, sometimes I want to say back, ‘You have Nikes on your feet, and they’re charging a 1,000 percent markup," said Geoffrey Davis of Burdell in Oakland. Wearing 37 pieces of flair may not help. If you've tried booking a reservation for more than four people, chances are the restaurant won't take it. It turns out restaurants are pushing back on large groups for a variety of reasons. So you may want to leave your extra friends at home. Of course, rules are made to be broken. Whether you're out for couples night or grandma's centennial, securing a venue for a large group isn't so easy these days. And restaurants don't help either because they tend to frown on large groups. On busy nights, they can't turn around tables fast enough, and those large brouhahas take up staff time for an already thin workforce. For customers, that can be as frustrating as waiting 30 minutes for a molten chocolate lava cake that winds up tasting like lava. Obviously, the ostracizing of large groups isn't great news if you're planning a bash, but there are ways to get around it. For one, choose less busy times where tables are more likely to be available, and restaurants are begging for patrons. I'm pretty sure you can find a Cheesecake Factory somewhere that isn't packed to the gills. Another is to see if your favorite restaurant has other locations since they may have different policies. Hey, it's the same Chuck E. Cheese everywhere, right? Finally, expand your horizons and look at other places. Can't get in at the crab shack?
