Reflecting on my four-year journey at FLYR, I am filled with gratitude for the amazing colleagues who have supported me and helped shape my career. I am thankful for the experiences and growth I have had and wish nothing but the best for my former colleagues and FLYR. Laid off… AI’s gonna take your job away! Hire effectively, or else you’ll need to fire soon because things will get automated! Well, not really! When electricity came, many people were jobless. People didn’t have to carry coal through the streets for lighting anymore. But new jobs were created, like electricians, power plant operators, linemen, and many more. Decades back, if someone told you that podcasting would be a great job, you would have laughed! Behind this automated work, a human operation is involved. The question is: 'How fast are we going to evolve?' I appreciate the reach outs from many emerging companies. I’ll review. Clearly there are a few trends in the industry. 1. There is an LLM driven tech transition going on.  This is leading to reorgs and layoffs in big companies. I also see senior engineers opting out of big organizations that aren’t figuring out their gen ai strategy fast enough.  They don’t know where to go and many are considering joining startups or founding their own. 2. AI startups are messing up internally even if it looks good externally.  There are a number of startups with founders with good backgrounds (influential academic/research) who can raise $10-100M, but are missing one of the following.  i) any real tech differentiation and the ability to build it, ii) product experience allowing them to match research ideas to real customer problems, iii) engineering leadership abilities that allow them to hire teams that work effectively together without politics .  Not to say that I’ve figured these out - it’s hard - but it helps to at least be able to see the problems. Im sure there are good options out there.  I’d also appreciate perspectives from employees and people on the market.  What are your top choices and why?

Look. the TRUE change-makers are the first to adapt. The significant layoffs in major tech companies throughout 2023 and 2024 indicate a shift towards AI technology, potentially requiring fewer human resources. This trend is a signal for all businesses to prepare for upcoming changes. After seeing all the recent layoffs at big companies like Tesla, TikTok, Apple, and AWS, I started looking for info to see if AI was somehow tied to it. Found lots of opinions, but I wanted hard data. That led me to this MIT article about how economists are getting a new angle on how tech affects job loss and job creation. I think AI's not going anywhere. Like the MIT study says, 'New technologies have strengths and weaknesses, and it takes a while to figure them out.' GPS started for the military, and now it's in every smartphone. The more I dive into AI for daily tasks – like a nutrition assistant that makes my shopping list and recipe book, or an assistant that gives me ideas for LinkedIn posts – the more I see how this tech could change our interactions with the world. David Autor from MIT says it well: 'You can think of automation as a machine that does a job for a worker.' And he calls out augmentation as tech that 'increases the variety, quality, or productivity of what people can do.' If you're not into tech, find it tedious, or just too much, you'll either pick it up or pay someone to do it for you, like someone who flies a drone or fixes your printer. It's tough to say if this is good or bad for humanity, but it's true that it's a fascinating tool.
