"I think my resume is the problem" Maybe. Let's figure it out.... 𝟭. 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀? A resume's purpose is to compel the reader (recruiter, hiring manager) to want to speak with you. That's it. 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀... 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲. Stop tinkering. You're going back to your resume as the 'problem' because something else about the job search is making you uncomfortable (e.g., you're getting interviews, but not getting past the phone screen or first round.) If this is the case, you need to diagnose what's not working. Hint 1: It *isn't* your resume. Step away from the resume. Hint 2: It probably has to do with your interview prep/presentation. (focus on this instead) BUT IF YOU AREN'T GETTING INTERVIEWS... 𝟮. 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁 Format is about 5% of the resume equation. People selling templates and resume services that mostly rearrange what you already have into a new template will try to make you *feel* like your resume 'isn't working' because it "doesn't look professional" Overrated. 100%. I've reviewed and written 1000's of resumes. An organized resume is to your benefit... but I've also hired qualified people with very ugly resumes Format isn't a strategy 𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙞𝙩 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙩, 𝙠𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙞𝙩 𝙨𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚: - Organized and neat is good enough - Word/Pages/Google Doc saved as PDF - 1-2 pages (let your content decide length) - Easy to read (sans serif) font - Black text, no crazy colors - No emojis - Avoid fancy columns, images, tables (they can cause some parsing issues with an ATS, but more importantly, they usually make your resume look 'busy', which can be distracting to your reader) 𝙉𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙖 𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚? There's a free one on my website. It's all you need. Really. 𝟯. 𝗙𝗶𝘅 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 This is where most people's resumes are a total stink bomb. Your resume's entire job is to show your reader things that make them want to talk with you further. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘀: -short, clear bullet points -bullets show you have skills for *job you want* (not the job you had) -4-6 bullets per job is usually good - Demonstrate you're *good at* the 3-5 core skills required for that role. An organized resume is to your benefit... but I've also hired qualified people with very ugly resumes Format isn't a strategy 𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙞𝙩 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙩, 𝙠𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙞𝙩 𝙨𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚: - Organized and neat is good enough - Word/Pages/Google Doc saved as PDF - 1-3 pages (let your content decide length) - Easy to read (sans serif) font - Black text, no crazy colors - No emojis - Avoid fancy columns, images, tables (they can cause some parsing issues with an ATS, but more importantly, they usually make your resume look 'busy', which can be distracting to your reader) 𝙉𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙖 𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚? There's a free one on my website. It's all you need. Really. 𝟯. 𝗙𝗶𝘅 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 This is where most people's resumes are a total stink bomb. (sorry, that was mean-ish) (but also, it's true) 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿: "𝘿𝙤 𝙄 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙠 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣?" That's it. Your resume's entire job is to show your reader things that make them want to talk with you further. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘀: -short, clear bullet points -bullets show you have skills for *job you want* (not the job you had) -4-6 bullets per job is usually good - Demonstrate you're *good at* the 3-5 core skills required for that role. And that's it. That's how you figure out if your resume needs work.
