Lately, I’ve been noticing a trend that’s both intriguing and frustrating: ghost jobs. These are job postings that look legitimate but aren’t actually being filled. It’s surprising to learn that about 40% of companies have posted these fake listings this year. Why do they do it? Some companies want to see what talent is available, others aim to project growth, and some even use it to keep their current employees motivated. But for job seekers, this can be incredibly disheartening. We invest time and effort into applications, only to find out the position was never real. As we navigate this evolving job market, it’s important for both employers and job seekers to be aware of this trend. Employers should aim for transparency, and job seekers need to stay vigilant and strategic. Have you encountered ghost jobs in your job search? I’d love to hear your experiences and thoughts on how we can address this issue #JobSearch #CareerAdvice #GhostJobs #HiringTrends

🛑 The Rise of Ghost Jobs: A Frustrating Reality in Today’s Job Market I recently watched a video discussing the alarming trend of "ghost jobs" – those job listings that seem perfect but never actually lead to a hire. It’s frustrating to spend time polishing your resume and crafting a cover letter, only to see the job reposted weeks later without any progress. This phenomenon reflects a deeper issue in the current job market. Companies are posting these "ghost jobs" not because they have real openings, but often to gauge talent availability, keep their options open, or even just to boost their market visibility. This creates a misleading picture of job opportunities, making it even harder for job seekers to navigate the market. As someone who has experienced this firsthand, it’s disheartening to see how these practices waste the time and energy of many talented professionals. It also muddles the true state of the labor market, making it difficult for both job seekers and analysts to understand what’s really happening. I believe it’s time for companies to take more responsibility in ensuring transparency in job postings. If we want to maintain trust and integrity in the hiring process, this is an issue that needs to be addressed. Has anyone else encountered these ghost jobs? What are your thoughts on how we can tackle this problem?

Ghost Jobs: A deceptive tactic used by companies to mislead hopeful job seekers Companies increasingly use ghost jobs and fake job listings with no intention of hiring to manipulate public perception. This deceptive practice can have negative consequences for both job seekers and the economy as a whole. Hi LinkedIn Friends! As job seekers, we all aim to make our searches as efficient and effective as possible. Unfortunately, ghost jobs—positions that remain posted but may not truly be open—can be a significant hurdle. Here are some strategies I've found useful in identifying and avoiding ghost jobs: ✅ Check the Posting Date: Focus on jobs posted within the last month. Old listings can often indicate closed positions. ✅ Research the Company: Verify the job on the company's official website or LinkedIn page. If it’s not listed there, it might be outdated. ✅ Look for Job Post Updates: Frequent reposting without changes might signal a ghost job. ✅ Utilize Company Reviews and Forums: Check sites like Glassdoor for insights into the company’s hiring practices. ✅ Network with Employees: Reach out to current or former employees to get an insider's perspective on open positions. ✅ Contact the Recruiter: If you're unsure, send a polite inquiry before applying to confirm the position's availability. ✅ Use Trusted Job Boards: Stick to reputable job boards and company career pages. ✅ Monitor Application Responses: Keep an eye on how many applications you send versus responses received. A lack of responses might indicate ghost jobs. ✅ Use LinkedIn Insights: Pay attention to the number of applicants and the frequency of updates on LinkedIn job postings. ✅ Be Skeptical of Suspect Patterns: Multiple listings for the same position without significant changes can be a red flag 🚩 . Stay vigilant and streamline your job search process with these tips. Let’s support each other in finding genuine opportunities and making the job search journey smoother for everyone. Ghost jobs exist when a real company posts a job listing, but... *the opening is cancelled but the post is not removed *there is no immediate intent to fill the job *the title is vague or the description is unprecise *the company engages with promising interviewees and recruiters but no one is ever selected **Adding my own: hiring latency can be created because a job demands a skill-set that is mismatched to the salary, and professionals can't accept a job that creates career-suicide. Ghost jobs are... *a sign of a declining labor market (or a freeze on job creation) *a peripheral indicator of labor reduction *a signal of uncertainty towards economic growth What you can do: *politely inquire in regards to the decision timeframe *keep interviewing until you spearhead an offer letter (don't assume that because an interview went well you got the job) *watch the market closely and look at the going rates for jobs Companies can also work with professional staffing agencies who are a great base of knowledge for organizational planning. Ghost jobs are becoming more common, contributing to the frustrating experience of job seekers. Some of the reasons include: • Companies keeping their options open and actively looking for talent since talent is, at times, not available when they’re trying to fill a role • Market visibility: more job openings show that a company is thriving and growing, which is a good sign to investors, clients and competitors that the company is expanding. • Market Research: Companies collect data points on the expected salary and skill sets of a particular job and also help to build Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for evaluation purposes.

Have you ever applied to your dream job only to see the exact same position posted weeks later and you get no feedback? You are not alone. This frustrating experience is more common now than in the past because of "ghost jobs.". Ghost jobs are those that show vacancy but are not open at all. They could be posted by a company to get potential candidates for future needs, test the market, or give more visibility to their brand. It creates an illusional sense of opportunities besides wasting time and efforts for job seekers. A recent survey revealed that four in ten companies posted fake jobs in 2024, and three in ten are currently advertising roles that do not exist. The trend shows a cooling economy wherein companies are reluctant to hire but continue to post roles to retain market presence or gather data. While on paper, this may look like a strong jobs market, it is certainly not what people experience in their everyday lives. On the one hand, ghost jobs distort the labour market and raise the difficulty level for job seekers and policy thinkers in finding out what the real situation is. It's time to know the signs of a ghost job—vague title, prolonged posting, huge numbers of applicants—while companies like these practices, as we navigate an environment. This means that, at this moment in time, when transparency is paramount, the onus must lie with the job boards and companies to stamp out the problem and not leave the job seeker chasing shadows. #HiringTrends #JobMarket #Employment #Recruitment #GhostJobs #OracleHCM #bayesbusinessschoolalumni #bayesalumni #bayesbusinessschool https://lnkd.in/e6eMxsBy
