OBEY IS ABSOLUTE, ACCORDING IS RELATIVE Obedience is a matter of attitude, while obeying is a matter of action (behavior). Acts 4:19 says, But Peter and John answered them: _Please decide for yourselves which is right before God: obeying you or obeying God_ However, their spirit did not rebel, but remained submissive under all those in authority. According is not an absolute thing; there are powers that must be obeyed, but there are powers that cannot be obeyed, such as matters involving the basic beliefs of Christians, for example, believing in God, preaching the Gospel, and so on. As a child, sometimes you are allowed to convey suggestions to your parents, but they must not contain a disobedient attitude. However, our obedience must be absolute. Things that we can obey, that means being obedient, but there are things that we cannot obey, but we also have to remain obedient. When making suggestions, you must remain obedient. It's an attitude problem. Acts 15 lists an example of a church congregation, While the trial is in progress, you may submit suggestions or opinions or even debate, but when a decision is made, everyone must obey it. Unity. A small word with huge implications. God set the tone for unity in Genesis 1:1 Creation was a "group endeavor" of the Trinity. This verse in Matthew 18:20 must be seen in context. It is Jesus' direction as to how the church should function. Christianity was never intended to be experienced in isolation. When there are several people in a church or small group, there will, at times, be differences of opinion as to how the group should function. There will even be hurtful words and actions that lead to a break in unity. When that happens, Jesus said, "First go and speak to the one who has hurt, or sinned against you." If that doesn't solve the issue, take a couple of believers with you and revisit the offender, and when TWO OR THREE GATHER IN MY NAME I'll be there. So, the 2 or 3 become 6 (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). And the group decision determines the next step; taking the issue to the entire body of believers. It pains me when I read of churches, or denominations turning to outside counsel to solve their internal problems.
