If you live in Fairfax County and have school-aged kids, chances are, you planned a trip for this weekend. And if you're like me, you know that planning a trip that appeals to a high schooler, middle-schooler, and an elementary-schooler all at once is a challenge (to say the least). With such a wide age range, finding activities that all three kids enjoy (and that us parents can tolerate) is no small feat. But we’ve developed a system that works 85% of the time: 1️⃣ Listen: And take turns. Each child gets a turn choosing an activity. 2️⃣ Set Boundaries: The activity can’t be unbearable for someone else (like no PG-13 movies for our 8-year-old!). 3️⃣ Provide a Budget: We share the budget for the trip or activity – the “Family Excursion” line in our budget – and the activity must stay within that limit. Funny enough, this process isn’t too different from managing a remote team. You’ve got a diverse group, all with differing interests and strengths. But by giving everyone a voice, setting clear boundaries, and managing resources, you can keep everyone engaged and working toward a common goal. Is it perfect? Nope. Becoming a mother changed me in ways I never expected. It sharpened my resilience, strengthened my determination, and deepened my empathy – Qualities that have not only helped me in life but have also made me a stronger leader. Balancing the responsibilities of motherhood while advancing my career hasn’t always been easy. But along the way, I learned valuable lessons about adaptability and compassion, both for myself and my team. Joining Rider Levett Bucknall RLB marked a turning point in my journey. The support I’ve received here has enabled me to find balance. I’ve been able to be present for my family while continuing to advance professionally. Shortly after I joined RLB, my daughter noticed I was spending more time at home and she actually asked me if I’d been fired from my job! 😂 Of course, I reassured her that wasn’t the case, but it made me reflect on how in previous roles, I hadn’t always been as present as I wanted to be. RLB’s inclusive policies, like offering part-time, manager-level roles for parents and promoting a healthy work-life balance, have made all the difference. And I’ve seen firsthand how this supportive culture positively impacts morale and well-being within my team. When employees feel valued and balanced, it shows in their work, leading to better project outcomes and stronger client relationships. It's a win-win. The occasion of Family Day at PKC served as a reminder of the profound impact of family support and the genuine concern that families have for their loved ones. It was a momentous occasion where employees and their families came together, reinforcing the unity that defines our workplace culture at PKC Management Consulting. Here are a few things that stood out for me, strengthening our understanding of creating a thriving work environment: 1. 😳 “Dad, you sit in here?!” So was the reaction from my kids a number of years ago when I took them to work for “Take Your Kids to Work Day” and showed them the boardroom. Ironically, every year my wife typically asks why I don't take the kids to work every day so that they get out of her hair. 🤣 "Take Your Kids to Work Day" isn't just fun for employees and kids alike – for those companies taking advantage of it, it turns our workplaces into classrooms where young minds get a front-row seat to the professional world. It’s not simply about showing our kids where we work and how the bills get paid; it’s about opening their eyes to possibilities and igniting dreams of their own futures. I’ve found it’s a great day to take pictures of your kids so you can show them years later when they're actually doing the job or, worse, living with you at home. 😲 So, here’s to the workplaces where the average age of those in attendance will drop substantially today, but, on a more serious note, understand the immense value of integrating family into our professional lives. 🚀 Have fun today kids! #TakeYourKidsToWorkDay #FutureLeaders #CareerInspiration
