For many youth in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, safe and accessible green space can be hard to come by — an unfortunate circumstance, considering the plethora of health benefits that accompany time spent in nature. But Prescribe Outside, a partnership fostered by the Nature Everywhere Communities initiative, aims to bridge that gap. By providing physicians and families with tools to locate and use public green spaces, Prescribe Outside is working to improve the health and wellness of Philadelphia children. For a city in which up to one in three children live in poverty, removing barriers to accessing nature’s benefits for children and families is crucial. And from a statistical perspective, Philadelphia is not lacking in green space. Ninety-five percent of city residents can walk to a park within 10 minutes from where they live, and the city boasts 10,797 acres of parkland. Wonder what we're doing at Gather Community Space, and what difference it can make? Check out this post and article!
What's your case? What do you provide to your community, to your neighbors? For us, our name says it all. We are a space where the community can gather. We foster community, and we provide meaningful programming. As this piece in The DO, the online magazine of the American Osteopathic Association, describes: "the decline in third spaces exacts a heavy toll on the overall well-being of communities, fostering environments where social inequalities thrive and collective resilience wanes...when these spaces vanish, the social fabric frays, leaving communities fragmented." The public health implications are stark, and that health care burden ripples across neighborhoods with real economic and social consequences. We are looking to do something about that. Every connection made, every program offered, and every plan begun is about hope, is about belief in our wonderful community. Join us in this effort to build Gather as we approach 2025 with an inaugural Executive Director (search is underway!), a renewed vision, and a deep commitment to our neighbors. #thirdspaces #communitybuilding #NEPA #WilkesBarre #hiring #community

📈 As cities everywhere seek to address health, environmental, and socio-economic challenges, local data has never been more important. To support our existing #Invest Health work, 10 small and midsized cities were selected to participate in the City Health Dashboard #DataChallenge. With support from Reinvestment Fund, the cities will focus on developing capacity to embed data-driven changemaking into their operations and programs. Throughout the year, participants will come together to leverage data to better understand local health and neighborhood condition challenges and target resources to community development strategies that ensure everyone has a fair and just opportunity to achieve their best health. A first-of-its-kind tool, the City Health Dashboard was created by researchers at NYU Grossman School of Medicine's Department of Population Health, and with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation https://lnkd.in/eG8snA6k

"Ultimately, bridging aims to create a new paradigm for what public health should be — one that goes back to more ambitious and radical roots. Bridging is about building trust, advancing transparent government, and promoting community-driven policy changes." A new blog by HIP's Lili Farhang and Julian Drix, MPH is live from The Commonwealth Fund! Read on to learn about bridging #publichealth and #socialmovements to drive change 🌉 https://lnkd.in/gc5AiuTv
🔗 Bridging Public Health and Social Movements to Drive Change Public health in the United States began with the convergence of broad social movements that led to drastic improvements in living conditions and extended life expectancy. But U.S. public health has since shifted away from its roots in social change and is now chronically underfunded and understaffed, weaknesses that were dramatically exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. On To the Point, Lili Farhang and Julian Drix, MPH of Human Impact Partners (HIP) explore the potential of “bridging” public health and community organizing groups to improve government transparency and accountability and to change policy for the better. The success stories they highlight include: 🏘️ The collaboration between Chelsea, Mass., a community organizing group, and immigrant Latino families to address the health impact of poor housing conditions and help tenants advocate for their rights. 🌱 An environmental group and a county health department working together to address health hazards in several neighborhoods in Kansas City, Kan. Learn more about how these kinds of collaboration can help bring #publichealth back to its more ambitious roots.

At Reach Out, we've been talking a lot lately about the Inland Healthy Cities Institute as it launches officially, and I wanted to be sure to share that information here as well, since I think it has broad reaching benefits to our local communities. The Inland Healthy Cities Institute was founded to address our region’s growing emphasis on population health, by partnering with municipalities within the Inland Empire to deliver cost effective, culturally informed, operationally sustainable community health transformation programs. ❓What are we actually doing for client cities? 🌟 Program Design – Working hand in hand with city leadership, funders, and community members, we lead a collaborative process to uncover the community’s most pressing needs. Using these inputs, we determine which focus areas and objectives demand the most attention, then we assemble programs, action committees, metrics, and funding sources that align to each. 🌟 Program Management – City staff tend to be busy, which is why our team of Program Managers, Specialists, and our partner network exist. From coordinating community events to hosting workshops and beautification projects, our staff can partner with yours in varying degrees, to help reduce workload and streamline administrative work like expense management and reporting. 🌟 Training & Advisory Support – Leveraging over a decade of experience delivering health programming to communities throughout the IE, we support new and existing healthy cities programs as an experienced advisor and a center for excellence, convening regularly to share best practices, train internal staff, and to help cities get the most of their initiatives and programs. 👉 RESULTS WE DELIVER: By beginning at the individual level and empowering community members with the resources, education, and support networks they need to make incremental lifestyle changes, slowly, the face of the community itself changes. More so than any one marker – and there are plenty (see below) – our work initiates a transformative paradigm shift in communities, instilling in residents and government alike a “health in all facets of life” outlook to decision making. When, at a fundamental level, communities see health as a point of pride, they work voraciously to preserve and promote it, in effect advancing collective well-being while catalyzing city enrichment and economic investment. Activity-friendly settings can have measurable benefits, as healthy environments can create healthy economies, which contribute to longer and healthier lives. Elements of an activity-friendly setting include greater walkability, better air quality, and fewer vehicle miles traveled. Popular approaches communities use to create activity-friendly places include: - Transportation: implement Safe Routes and Vision Zero initiatives to help slow neighborhood traffic, improving safety. - Housing and Development: create affordable housing that is diverse and accessible. - Community Engagement: involve businesses and developers in healthy design policies. NCCOR’s factsheet provides some examples of activity-friendly places, their approaches, and key benefits.
