Looking to make a difference in your community? Here's one powerful way NAEA members can advocate for art education: Have your students create custom art postcards highlighting why the arts are crucial in education. Each postcard can feature a unique artwork alongside a heartfelt message about the positive impact of art on their lives and learning. Once completed, gather these works of art and mail them to local and national legislators. By sharing these powerful messages through art, we can show policymakers firsthand how arts education enriches our communities, fosters creativity, and empowers students. What are some ways you advocate for art education in your community? Share your thoughts in the comments below! Make your mark and make a difference! Let's make our voices heard and advocate for the arts together! #ArtEducationAdvocacy #ArtEdAdvocate #AdvocateForTheArts #NAEA #ArtTeachers #ArtsEd #ArtsEducation

As Juneteenth approaches, Calvert County is proud to honor the remarkable contributions of African American soldiers who served in the United States Colored Troops (USCT) during the Civil War. The Calvert County Department of Planning & Zoning, Historic Preservation, in collaboration with the Calvert Historical Society, is driving an ongoing historical preservation initiative to highlight the stories of these unsung heroes who helped shape Calvert County and American history. Through detailed research using service and pension records, Freedmen’s Bureau records, census data and historic maps and imagery, this project brings to light the significant, yet often overlooked, contributions of African Americans to the county’s history. Research findings have already revealed the profound impact these individuals had in shaping the community. Often having to escape enslavement to volunteer, these men served, fought battles and many returned to establish institutions that remain pillars of our community to this day: from churches and schools to the living legacy of their descendants. These stories reinforce the lasting influence of African Americans on Calvert County’s culture and society. Residents are encouraged to contribute to this historical preservation effort by sharing any information they may have about their ancestors who served in the USCT. Your stories, documents and artifacts can help enrich the project and ensure that these heroes receive the recognition they deserve. In a new Trump Vance administration, the US Department of Education would be abolished. Science and history would be taught through a filter of Christian nationalism and white supremacy. African American studies, teaching the history of the transatlantic slave trade, abolition, the emancipation of enslaved people and the civil rights movement would be made illegal. The specific policies to eradicate Black history from the national curriculum are set out in Project 2025 devised and published by the Heritage Foundation. Far right activist Steve Bannon is leading groups of white supremacists and Christian nationalists to deliver Project 2025. America's far right policies are promoted by Donald Trump, JD Vance and Steve Bannon. They are financed by Peter Thiel, Elon Musk and other wealthy anti-democratic donors. They are designed to withdraw access to evidence-based education from millions of American children and young people from January 2025 should Donald Trump regain control of the White House. Full details of the plans are online www.project2025.org Image credit: Spider Martin/National Museum of African American History and Cultural/Smithsonian Institute
