Hey Friends, Please bear with me, this is emotional. I was diagnosed with T1D (type one diabetes) over 35 years ago. T1D is a disease that affects patients, their families, their friends and their coworkers. It’s not the kind of disease that you can avoid with diet or lifestyle. You don’t get it from eating too much junk food. You don’t get it because of anything you did, you get this because quite literally your body is fighting itself. If you have T1D, it becomes your job to fight your body fighting itself. And you’ll need all the help you can get. My pancreas doesn’t make insulin to help me regulate my blood sugar. Of course not, that’s what normal people’s pancreases do. Instead, I have to take insulin injections daily, well technically I infuse it. I take insulin all day every day and monitor my blood sugar constantly to keep myself alive. Even if I do everything right, it’s highly likely that I’ll experience high blood sugars and low blood sugars that can be life-threatening and lead to complications with my disease that will impact my life. Yep, that’s all happened to me, and it’s not a flattering experience. And um, ahem, if you’re in my support network, it affects you too. Over my 35 years with T1D, there have been people fighting for advancements in T1D treatment and care that were once only Science Fiction. Things like continuous glucose monitors, fast acting insulin, and looping systems that can automatically regulate my blood sugar - these were once only wild dreams. Now these things are Science Fact. These technological breakthroughs are realities that have positively impacted the lives of those with T1D and those around us throughout my lifetime. Advancements like these have been dreams come true. One organization has been at the forefront of it all, the world’s leading organization for T1D research and advocacy, Breakthrough T1D (JDRF). Almost every significant advancement in the treatment, care, and prevention of T1D has come because of Breakthrough T1D. They are such a worthy cause. On November 10th, I’ll be walking to support Breakthrough T1D and I hope you’ll join me there at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. If you can’t make it to the walk, I hope you’ll consider a donation for T1D research and advocacy to Breakthrough T1D. 🍬 💉 Happy World Diabetes Day 💉🍬 That's right 'Happy'. It may not be the easiest path in life but today marks the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin. There are 35,000 children in the UK alone who depend insulin, taking multiple doses every day in order to survive. After diagnosis we were injecting my daughter with insulin 6-10 times every day, with every dose having to be carefully calculated based on her current blood glucose levels and the amount of carbs she was due to eat. But thanks to research and developments in T1D she now has something called a Hybrid Closed Loop Insulin Pump which administers Insulin through a pod on her stomach. Not only does this minimize the number of injections she needs, hugely improving her day-to-day life, it helps to reduces the long term effects of T1D. Developments like this are why I'm currently fundraising for Breakthrough T1D who fund research into T1D. If you're able to sponsor me, then please do.

Sepsis; known as a "silent killer" kills more people in the UK than breast, bowel, & prostate cancer combined. Our Dad died of sepsis ten days after celebrating his 90th birthday, as regrettably, the Hospital failed to investigate sepsis, which culminated in Dad passing two days after he was admitted. The Medical Examiner, could not issue the death certificate, as there were conflicting views from doctors, on his cause of death, so it was referred to the Coroner’s office, with a post mortem instigated. Ten months later we attended the full day Inquest, that determined that Dad did indeed die of sepsis. After the Inquest, the coroner issued a Regulation 28 Report – R28 to the Hospital Trust, which identified the failure to commence a diagnostic pathway to investigate sepsis. The Chief Executive of the Hospital replied to the R28, this time last year, detailing a number of improvements, to ensure sepsis screening in the Emergency Departments was improved. We asked the Chief Executive if the report could be enhanced by adding the current sepsis policy. Unfortunately we did not receive a reply of condolence, we were passed directly to the Trusts legal department. We now have an ongoing claim & have clarified to the Trust lawyers that any monies obtained, will be donated to the UK Sepsis Trust, to support their mission to improve sepsis outcomes, by educating healthcare professionals & empowering the public to Just Ask: Could it be Sepsis? Additionally, in Dads memory & to raise awareness of sepsis, in May 2025, my two brothers & me, will be Skydiving from 15,000ft, with all donations going to the UK Sepsis Trust. Kudos to our extraordinary team members who participated in the Breakthrough T1D Walk last weekend! The Breakthrough T1D Walk is an event focused on taking action for the entire type 1 diabetes community through raising funds to find a cure, prevent, and better treat T1D. We are #CHNOLAproud of you! Each November, we honor #NationalDiabetesAwarenessMonth - one of the most common, chronic incurable diseases of childhood. Most children and adolescents with diabetes require daily treatment with injected insulin for their survival. Research has shown that keeping blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible can help prevent long term complications of diabetes such as eye, kidney and nerve damage as well as cardiovascular disease. However achieving ideal control of diabetes in childhood is challenging and can be frustrating for patients and their families. The mission of the Children’s Hospital Diabetes Center is to help our patients achieve optimal management of diabetes while they participate fully in normal activities of childhood and adolescence. Stroke can be a serious and major complication in people with HHT (Ribeiro et al., 2011). Stroke in HHT can be from lung AVMs (typically ischemic stroke) or brain AVMs (typically hemorrhagic stroke). Patients and family members should be aware of the signs and symptoms of stroke and seek emergency care immediately if symptoms present. Use the F.A.S.T. Warning Signs to spot a stroke. F = Face Drooping – Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person's smile uneven? A = Arm Weakness – Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? S = Speech Difficulty – Is speech slurred? T = Time to call 911, the faster the care, the better the outcome.
