Today, we take a moment to reflect on the powerful journey and mission of one of our own, Alexis Searle—our colleague, leader, GBV survivor, and now, advocate. As Alexis shared in an article with MTN: “Healing begins when we create safe spaces, connect with others, and empower ourselves with knowledge to take the next step, whatever that may be.” Her personal story of resilience, healing, and transformation is the foundation of The I AM Collective, an initiative born from her desire to create access to the same kind of support, connection, and education that helped her find strength and clarity through moments of unclarity. The I AM Collective’s mission is to build communities that educate and empower individuals affected by GBV. Through storytelling, decoded by clinicians and localised for real-life solutions, Alexis is working to inspire action and healing on a wider scale. This 16 Days of Activism against GBV, Alexis is launching the beta phase of this transformative program across Heart FM and Gagasi FM, reaching over 2 million listeners. Her call to action is one we all need to hear: • Take the time to reflect. • Take the necessary steps to help yourself. • And build the courage to stand up for someone else. At Chenosis, we stand with Alexis and all survivors to say #NoExcuse for gender-based violence. Her courage inspires us to create a safer, more empathetic world, one story, and one action at a time. Let’s join Alexis and take the next step together. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dM4ZwhTt #NoExcuse #16DaysOfActivism #GenderBasedViolence #IAmCollective

"You're a Lawyer? But You’re So Soft-Spoken!" This one fact often surprises people when they first meet me. “How can you be so soft-spoken and be a lawyer?” they ask. “You’re really gentle and quite the introvert. How do you reconcile that with the ruthlessness of the legal profession?” I usually smile and explain that I’m far from gentle when I encounter injustice or unequal treatment of any kind. For me, being a lawyer isn’t about being aggressive, loud, or overly assertive. Those aren’t the yardsticks for determining who makes a good lawyer. In my view, being a great lawyer is about having the courage to stand up for the truth, advocate for the oppressed, and serve as a beacon of hope for the underserved. This perspective is why I admire many of my colleagues and friends who use their positions to drive positive change. But here’s the thing: You don’t need to be a lawyer to stand up for others or make a difference. No matter what field you work in, you can choose to be intentional about positively impacting the lives of others. You can build your career or business in a way that is value-driven, people-centered, and impact-oriented—all without sacrificing profitability. That’s why we created JEDI Centre Africa—to empower changemakers like you. At JEDI Centre, you’ll learn the rudiments of building an impact-driven business that balances purpose with sustainability and profit. If this resonates with you, why not take the first step? Democracy is, at its core, a vehicle for participatory governance. Unfortunately, Nigeria's civic space and, consequently, democracy are designed in a way that doesn't capture the views of huge swaths of our population, ranging from the elderly to the youth. How do you build a more inclusive and participatory democracy?! How do we bridge the gap between the youth and elderly in how best to demand for good governance?! These are the issues we plan to canvass during this fireside chat. I hope you participate in this very important conversation which couldn't be more timely in view of the #EndBadGovernance protests.#CIvicSpace #Democracy
Once upon a time in a nation of over 200 million, a rift began to form…😡 The voices of the young were loud, passionate, and demanding change. Meanwhile, the wisdom of the elderly was fading into the background, overshadowed by the rapid rise of social media and fast-paced conversations. In a civic space where both generations struggled to be heard, the gap between their perspectives widened, leading to fragmented demands and missed opportunities. But what if these voices could come together? 🤝 Imagine a fireside chat where the energy of youth meets the experience of age. Where stories of the past inspire actions for the future, and where a shared vision for a more inclusive Nigeria is born. 🌍 Global Rights invites you to this unique intergenerational dialogue. Let’s come together to bridge the divide, amplify all voices, and create a civic space that truly reflects the needs and aspirations of every citizen. 🗓️ Date: 16th August, 2024 | 3:30 PM 📍 Location: Hybrid Register Here: https://lnkd.in/dx_2zn3X #CivicSpace #OneVoice #GRHBF #GlobalRights

The State of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women Regional Feature unpacks harmful social norms and the various ways they influence IPV in West Africa. "...in the exercise of these norms along with control tactics on women, male partners find social support for their acts and behavior. For example, in Nigeria, a man (boyfriend/husband) could beat, divorce, or murder his wife for offenses that he considers disrespectful to his person or name. IPV has its base in structural and systemic functionalism- IPV evolves, and gets embedded into the social fabrics of any society and perpetuates its practice as norm based on precedents." The Feature emphasizes the need to move beyond tokenism and dismantle structural and systemic fundamentalism that maintains tolerance and acceptance of practices that violate women and girls. "Actions Speak Louder Than Words" - a powerful saying, and one that undoubtedly captures the spirit of University of Johannesburg 's Community Engagement program. But as I learned this past Friday, words can be equally impactful. UJ's Mandela Month webinar brought together inspiring NGO founders who shared their stories of overcoming challenges. From innovative handwashing initiatives to community-led seed banks, their impact is undeniable. However, what resonated most was their emphasis on the power of dialogue. I've often avoided discussions about South Africa's challenges, tired of the chorus of complaining. Yet, when listening to the speakers share their community's struggle, I wasn’t fighting a yawn, I was hanging on the edge of my seat, and then it clicked, what we need isn't less conversation, but better ones. Let's shift our focus from problems to solutions. By sharing our experiences, ideas, and perspectives, we can create a symphony of change. With Mandela Day just one week ago, let's use this momentum to ignite meaningful conversations. #MandelaMonth #SouthAfrica #CommunityEngagement #SolutionOriented #DialogueForChange #UJ #StrategicCommunication
