Chealsea Wierbonski’s Post

I’ve been thinking a lot about authentic confidence lately and how important it is for us as women to develop as part of our leadership skills. Authentic confidence comes from within and is based on an innate and unwavering belief in yourself; it’s not based on the approval of others or from external acknowledgements. It empowers us to take risks, feel confident in our decisions, and to persevere in situations that may seem ambiguous, difficult, or even insurmountable. Authentic confidence gives us the ability to say and do things that others are not saying and doing. It helps us take that first step towards an unknown outcome, without any indicator that what we’re doing is “right”. Most importantly, authentic confidence gives us the ability to believe in ourselves, our thoughts, our insights and our convictions, all of which help us to become confident, healthy leaders. But authentic confidence is not always going to come from the things that make us feel good about ourselves. In fact, another important part of developing authentic confidence is to accept all aspects of ourselves, including our flaws–YES, even our flaws! This may sound counter-intuitive, but self-acceptance is a big part of authentic confidence. Accepting your full self for who you are, as you are, shines a light on parts of yourself that you may be ashamed of and hesitant to show to the rest of the world, especially to your co-workers! What I’ve found is that by accepting our perceived flaws (and I say “perceived” because usually these aren’t flaws at all), we remove the power that they have over us and gain the strength to show up at work embodying our full selves in an authentically confident way. This authentic confidence is what empowers you to be a strong leader! Take some time to reflect on one aspect of yourself that you intentionally hide from your co-workers. Practice self-acceptance by committing to being more open and honest about this part of yourself any time it comes up in conversation.
