Perfect topic for me as well: One story to tell: Bring Your Brain to Work, the oldest son, who was right out of college, was given an opportunity to apply for a position at a firm that normally was given to people with a few years of experience. He asked me what to do, and my response was that “If you’re completely qualified for the job you apply for, you aimed too low.” He ultimately got the role — and despite having a lot to learn, he has done well. #learninganddevelopment #canadianeconomy #immigration #jobalerts #interviewtips

This is such an interesting post by Harvard Business Review. Since working for myself as a Virtual PA I have definitely taken on tasks I either hadn't done for a long time or didn't have much experience with and also used systems I hadn't used before. But I am a fast learner and a good student and have made a success of everything I've turned my hand to. I value this concept for both internal and external roles. Whether your organization leans towards a top-down approach or a bottoms-up one when it comes to finding new opportunities, the advice remains relevant. Pursuing paths that stretch your comfort zone is essential for skill and career growth. It took me a decade to grasp this realization and another couple of years to put it into action and share it with my mentees. I've realized I've often stayed within my comfort zone, limiting myself to familiar roles in supply chain and logistics within my current organizational level. This approach hindered my ability to leverage one of my key superpowers: quickly connecting dots and operationalizing new knowledge. Learning new concepts is what energizes me the most. I'm grateful for taking the leap into Program Management of Uber's Global Racial Equity Initiative. It was a challenging role, both in scope and subject matter, but it was crucial. I rapidly gained a wealth of knowledge and discovered a sense of purpose I hadn't realized before, which ultimately led me to various DEI and advisory positions at Harry's. Now, I'm committed to expanding my search for growth and skill development in my career and spreading the concept into my network. I'm no longer afraid to aim for bigger challenges and matching job descriptions at much less than 100%. I'm confident in my ability to learn and problem-solve effectively to bridge any gaps swiftly.

Too many people, especially women, focus on jobs they are overqualified for – and that’s a mistake and can lead to stagnating your career. An upward trajectory in the workplace requires consistently acquiring the skills needed to take on the next position. Learning these skills when you’re in a position for which you are overqualified will require that you learn “off the clock” rather than incorporating learning into the daily performance of your job. Look for a position that will stretch you, not one where you can already tick all of the boxes.
