A sobering session with Sir John Scarlett, former Chief of MI6, focusing on the current conflicts and the impact on the political and business communities with no end game currently in sight.

At this month's American European Business Association lunch, we were hugely privileged to hear Sir John Scarlett KCMG OBE, Chairman of SC Strategy Ltd and former Chief of MI6, who kindly spoke to our AEBA Members and guests on the uncertainty and unpredictability of a number of international situations that we are confronting. Whilst there most definitely aren’t answers for everything, Sir John’s insight across such a wide range of issues, and his analysis of the potential implications for us all were invaluable to hear.
With great thanks to William Clutterbuck Vice Chairman, H/Advisors Maitland, for hosting us and to Paul Staples, Chair of the AEBA for hosting on behalf of the AEBA.

The contribution of the ACCI to the performance of the African press
The ACCI works to facilitate the participation of African media in international events which focus on competitive intelligence and communication. This includes the Festival de l’intelligence économique francophone – FIEF (Francophone competitive intelligence festival) and the African Competitive Intelligence Day (JAIE), which are held annually. These events contribute to strengthening the network of certified journalists from the ACCI, showcasing their expertise, and promoting the exchange of expertise and the sharing of best professional practices.

An article I wrote for The CEO Magazine - Middle East on the #KSA#RHQ programme and how such laser focus risks becoming blinkeed vision for other quality #FDI opportunities.

Big congratulations to the World Trade Organization Secretariat for hosting its annual Presidential Lecture, this time featuring Charles Michel, President of the European Council. So many valuable insights were shared, and here are some of our takeaways:
🌐 Trust, Trade, Transform: Multilateralism in today's complex world requires three core elements – building trust, advancing trade as an engine of cooperation, and transforming institutions to meet 21st-century challenges.
⚖️ Reforming the WTO: A top priority for the EU, President Michel underscored the importance of reforming the WTO's dispute settlement mechanism to ensure a fair and impartial process. This reform is crucial to making global trade rules work for all countries, large and small.
🌱 The Role of Trade in Sustainability: Trade, when managed effectively, can be a powerful tool for climate action. President Michel highlighted the need for international cooperation on environmental standards and "just transitions" to make sustainable growth accessible to developing countries.
🤝 EU-Africa Cooperation: President Michel expressed a strong commitment to fostering deeper trade and economic partnerships with Africa and noted that EU support should prioritize growth and development.
🕰️ Strategic Patience and Active Listening: In response to complex global challenges, President Michel advocated for strategic patience and active listening, especially when addressing the needs of diverse regions and countries. This approach is vital to creating inclusive and enduring solutions in international trade.

A last-minute decision enabled the Western Balkans six countries to sign key regional cooperation agreements at the Berlin Summit. This was thanks to the skilled diplomacy of Manuel Sarrazin, Germany’s Special Representative for the Western Balkans, and the political will of regional leaders.
In a crucial compromise, Kosovo agreed to lift its ban on Serbian imports at the Merdare crossing. As part of the deal, Germany and its allies pledged to provide advanced scanners to enhance security at the Kosovo-Serbia borders, a necessary step that has yet to be implemented.
I sat down with Manuel Sarrazin to discuss the complexities of these negotiations. Sarrazin shared how he played a pivotal role in persuading Kosovo’s Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, to lift the ban—a move vital to unblocking CEFTA (Central European Free Trade Agreement) and advancing the Berlin Process. Sarrazin also spoke about the security concerns that arose, particularly in light of the recent Banjska incident, and how Germany’s offer to provide scanners is part of a broader effort to bolster both trade and border security.
I asked Manuel Sarrazin on the removal of the 🇪🇺sanctions towards Kosovo and his answer is supportive of Prime Minister Kurti’s request, especially after Banjska, but he call for less surprises from Prishtina: “It’s clear after Banjska, many in Kosovo see them as imbalanced, and we need to address that. However, uncoordinated military moves are surprising us; without coordination, are not increasing chances for success, even if the argument is valid". #BalkansDebriefhttps://lnkd.in/e2YffSv2
