Charlie Liang’s Post

Too often, I see people making the mistake of hiring people based on where they worked previously instead of the stuff that really matters. What really matters is how well they can solve problems and work with others to accomplish goals. The best way to get signal for these two things is to try to have as many micro-simulations of problem solving and collaboration during interviews as possible. I'm not saying being a part of growth stories and having impressive stints doesn't matter, but too often, I've found them to be way overweighted in the interview decision making process. Being at the right place at the right time and knowing how to pick companies to join is a skill, but it's not a huge predictor of success. Correlation does not imply causation. Instead, hire problem-solvers who can help you hit company goals in any market, and cultural fits who will ensure you have a team that lasts!
