Great report by Ember on the case for connecting Europe and North America with an interconnector. While this sounded crazy to most a few years back, interconnecting continents as part of a #globalgreengrid is increasingly being considered, and rightly so. Companies like Xlinks, SunCable and National Grid are involved in this, and helping turn idea into reality accross the globe. It will be interesting to see whether projects like these help to bring countries closer together, at a time when taxes, trade wars and protectionism dominate the headlines. https://lnkd.in/eKWnkivJ

Hello LinkedIn network! 🌟🔌 Reflecting on past financial forecasts for energy transitions, former German Environment Minister Jürgen Trittin's 2004 claim that the cost would be as minimal as a scoop of ice cream per household starkly contrasts with today's realities. This example underscores the importance of realistic financial planning in energy projects. #EnergyTransition #PublicPolicy #FinancialForecasting #EnlitEurope 🔗 Click the link below for an actual summary 🌱 https://lnkd.in/ejpyERiY

From 11 to 14 June, I had the chance to go to the European Sustainable Energy Week 2024, organised by the European Commission. The main conclusions of the various panels that took place reflect several key messages and common concerns around the energy transition, security and competitiveness of the European Union: ➕ During this legislature (2019-2024), the EU has made significant progress in increasing targets for renewables and energy efficiency. However, more effort is needed to #implement all legislation adopted during the past legislature and to ensure #strong #governance that promotes transparency and citizen participation. ➕ The Russian invasion of Ukraine highlighted the EU's vulnerability due to its dependence on external energy sources, underlining the need for an energy policy that ensures long-term security and prosperity. Furthermore, the integration of various energy sources, such as solar, wind and hydropower, presents challenges due to the lack of #adequate #infrastructure. Therefore, the next legislature should focus on improving energy infrastructure, such as electricity grids. On the other hand, as the EU increases its reliance on renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, which are inherently variable, #storage #capacity and #flexibility of the energy system become indispensable to maintain stability and security of supply. ➕ The competitiveness of the European energy industry, especially in areas such as offshore wind, batteries and electrolysis, is essential to maintain the European Union's position in the global market. ➕ The EU's green transition requires #robust #financing, speed of #implementation and #strong #governance. Currently, there is a slowdown in the implementation of EU policies at national level, and there is a need to promote policies that facilitate investment and access to finance. ➕ #Social #acceptance is one of the major challenges in the coming years for the deployment of the energy transition. ➕ To ensure the sustainability and security of technologies such as solar PV panels, the #supply #chain must be rebuilt at the #local #level. ➕ Europe must focus on #competing #on #quality and #innovation rather than price, which requires substantial investment in research, development and training of a highly skilled workforce.

Thanks to the #InflationReductionAct, $500 billion in #cleanenergy investments have already poured into U.S. communities, cutting energy bills for millions. To keep this momentum going—and build a clean energy economy—America needs strong leadership in the next term.

❗ In case you have missed it, here's the latest op-ed we published on CEENERGYNEWS. Szabolcs I. Ferencz made a comprehensive analysis of the infrastructure development still needed in #CEE, the past, present and future of the incremental capacity process and how proper regulation and financial support are necessary to aid the region’s #diversification and result in a more effective #energytransition. The REA broadly welcomes today's #Budget from the Chancellor Rt Hon Rachel Reeves. The new fiscal rules reflect a more positive shift in attitudes towards #infrastructure investment in the economy, including in the #renewablenergy and #cleantech sector. However, there were some missed opportunities. The REA's Chief Executive, Trevor Hutchings, said: "The confirmation of policies like the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (#CBAM), the #WarmHomesPlan, and #GBEnergy funding, along with continued support for #electricvehicles and increased funding for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, all represent positive leaps forward. Yet, there are missed opportunities to drive more ambitious outcomes, such as increasing the Fuel Duty rate and Carbon Floor Price, which could accelerate our transition to #netzero.
