This morning, I read an article about the challenges local governments face in deploying EV infrastructure. As a member of our Public Sector team and as an individual who may one day own an EV, one of my key takeaways was quite disconcerting: local and federal governments are disconnected when it comes to creating and implementing sustainable policies. Some of the biggest obstacles in the EV transition, according to mayors across the U.S., include: - A lack of publicly accessible charging stations - Inadequate grid infrastructure - Limited funding So how can these mayors and their communities overcome these challenges? While there is no silver bullet solution, my mind jumped to the numerous energy performance contracting (EPC) projects our Public Sector team has completed over the years, which have helped all sorts of public entities tackle these same challenges. EPC is a potential option to help local governments deploy EV infrastructure and build grid resilience more quickly and efficiently. At any rate, it’s crucial that those implementing these federal policies--our own local communities--have support and access to every tool available for successful adoption of EVs and other sustainability initiatives. #EVCharging #NationalElectricVehicleInfrastructure #NEVI #Hawaii "The Hawaii Department of Transportation chose the perfect kahu to conduct Wednesday morning’s blessing for its new electric vehicle charging station on Kuihelani Highway in Kahului. During his blessing, Kahu Kalani Wong said he has been driving electric vehicles for 12 years and calculates they have saved him from buying 7,000 gallons of gasoline. It’s hard to hear a number like that and not do the math of turning gallons into dollars and cents. Wong later joked its almost enough to buy a new car. The charging station at the Kahului Park & Ride lot near Kuihelani’s intersection with Puunene Avenue features four 150 kW DC fast chargers with Combined Charging System (CCS) and CHArge de MOve (CHAdeMO) ports. The station funded by the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program is the first in Hawaii. An additional 10 are planned for the state, with one scheduled to be built in West Maui. The location of that site has not yet been determined. According to a release from the DOT, design and construction of the NEVI station at the Kahului Park & Ride cost $3 million; with $2.4 million coming from federal funds and $600,000 from the state highway fund. ... Maui EV drivers can use the chargers for free through March 10. Starting March 11, users can pay for their charges through the EV Connect App at evconnect.com/ or by credit card at the charger. Charger availability can also be checked at the EV Connect App. Rates have not yet been finalized. ... The DOT had a pair of its EV vehicles parked at the station to demonstrate how the chargers work. Shishido said the DOT currently operates a fleet of 43 Tesla cars and 45 Ford F-150 Lightning trucks statewide. He said the DOT has seen considerable savings on maintenance costs with the vehicles."

The Golden State just got a little greener! 🌿✨ California proudly marks a pivotal moment in accelerating the EV revolution; it now boasts one public EV charging port for every five conventional gas stations. This significant leap towards a more sustainable future is a clear testament to the state's commitment to reducing emissions and embracing clean energy. The pioneering state is leading the charge with a staggering 105,000 public and shared private EV chargers. The journey towards a greener tomorrow doesn't end here - California is trailblazing with the adoption of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) too. 🚘🔌 If California stood alone on the global stage, it would rank as the fourth-largest in EV sales, just behind behemoths like China and Germany! A future of electric mobility shines brighter as California continues to push boundaries, all in the lead-up to the state's ambitious 2035 ban on new gas car sales. This transition is further bolstered by a hefty $1.9 billion investment earmarked to add up to 40,000 new public EV chargers. Plus, the recent Tesla Supercharger network opening to non-Tesla vehicles catalyzes accessibility to fast charging like never before. ⚡ As California surges forward in its green crusade, what moves can other states make to rev up their EV infrastructure? Let's drive the conversation further — how will you contribute to a cleaner, electric future? #ElectricVehicles #Sustainability #CleanEnergy

Interesting read by CalMatterson on the many big obstacles standing in the way of California's goal of one million EV chargers by 2030. California must build public EV charging stations at an unprecedented pace to support the expected 7 million electric cars by 2030. With only 80,000 public chargers currently, the state needs to install 129,000 new stations each year to reach its goal of one million chargers by 2030, and eventually 2.1 million by 2035! With any big Policy goals and mandates, implementation and roll-out at the local level is where the rubber meets the road. The state and local governments need billions in state, federal, and private investments, streamlined permitting processes, and major power grid upgrades to meet these hefty goals. Utility companies are already feeling the stretch to meet the demand of the exponential increase in power necessary to build up EV charging infrastructure. Finally, consumers and commuters like myself are left with many questions and concerns about the driving range of EVs and the availability of a reliable charging network, especially in our most underserved communities without access to chargers at home. Interesting conversations happening at the local level, and many opportunities for innovative solutions and partnerships between the public and private sectors. #EV #ElectricVehicles #Sustainability #PublicPrivatePartnerships #InfrastructureDevelopment #GreenEnergy #CleanTransportation https://lnkd.in/gCJftcZM

🚀 Only 7 EV Charging Stations Ready to Roll After 2 Years and $7.5 Billion Investment in EV Charging. If you eat, breathe, and live EV Charging and haven't read Shannon Osaka's recent piece in the Washington Post "Biden's $7.5 billion investment in EV Charging has only produced 7 stations in two years," I recommend that you stop what you are doing right now and read it, here: https://lnkd.in/gKNipzCU 📰 What I'd like to point out in this post is the incredible opportunities for EV Charging companies to work with the Federal Governments and States to get this done and what they need to do. 1️⃣ Quality: The top issue that seems to be affecting the rollout is that chargers must be operational 97% of the time to be eligible for funding (significantly outperforming the standard of 80%). You can hear the City of Olean, New York talking about these types of requirements, here: https://lnkd.in/gCj-DuGP. If you can meet the requirement, there is a lot of work to be had. 2️⃣ Time Crunch! If President Biden gets re-elected, his set timeframe is by 2026, meaning for the next two years, building must be fast and furious. In our platform, there were 77 meetings that discuss EV Charging in the US last week, including this one from Cary, North Carolina, discussing the need to add EV charging stations for growing parts of their community, which you can listen to here:https://lnkd.in/gNehaUUW. (Note: What's being suggested at this point is ChargePoint—if you aren't from that team, you are well behind.) 3️⃣ Innovative Solutions: If you can find a way to make EV charging easier to attach to infrastructure like light poles or beneath roads, you also have an edge. 🔍 Are you an EV charging firm seeking to be part of the $7.5 billion project? Stay informed about every lead by using Cloverleaf AI. Our system processes 1.5 million government meetings at the Federal, State, and local levels, making them actionable in less than 10 minutes a day. There has beeen significant progress in adding charging stations but as noted in this article” there are major challenges in making the switch to EVs in such a short period. For comparison, he said, consider the development of the current infrastructure supporting vehicles with internal combustion engines. The first drive-up gas station in the U.S. opened in 1913, according to the National Association of Convenience Stores—that was more than 20 years after the first gasoline-powered vehicles appeared.” Once again though we need to not lock ourselves into one fuel or power source but multiple ones and matching the best cleaner solution with the different transportation applications.
From community-based to commercial vehicle charging, meet some of the innovative companies that are helping ensure the next era of mobility is electric. We are proud to work with government agencies, private industry, and utilities to make sure everyone is ready for zero-emission transportation.
