As someone who has been impacted by layoffs, as I sit here quietly working on a project or two and applying for new positions, seeing all the recruitment specialists throw out essays on how to use the "Open to work" banner, or whether or not to use cover letters can honestly get pretty confusing. While I have no deep or great insight (aside from using tools like the open to work banner and cover letters, or not using them, will impact the kinds of employers that engage with you - for example, I'm not sure I would do well at a company that looks down on someone for using the open to work banner, so I'm not that hesitant to use it!), it does feel a bit like being a kid again on the playground, watching people argue about whether x thing or y thing is better Anyway, Ill check back in and see if there is a more unified opinion on these things again in a few years. Maybe someone will have gotten a grant to research it and provide some data to go along with the opinions! (I should be clear, I love reading the different perspectives on things like this, but I have yet to see an argument for some of these things that feels data driven!)

Advice to job seekers out there... I know it's a tough, competitive, cutthroat market, and the combination of mass layoffs isn't helping. I've had 10+ friends get laid off just in the last month... In my opinion, now is one of those moments where sending a resume may NOT be enough to grab the recruiter's attention, because there are a THOUSAND other resumes that you're competing with. It's very saturated! So, the question is: How to separate yourself from a thousand other people? Here's a thought!: Take a video selfie on your iPhone. Dress well, write a little script to prepare (maybe 60 seconds, tops) and send that to the recruiter along with your resume... A Video-Resume! If you really want the job, now is the time to do something extra to STAND OUT, and you don't need fancy equipment or lighting or microphones... (maybe just sit in a quiet area to avoid noise)... If I got a video resume from someone who wanted to work for me... there's a pretty high likelihood that they would get my attention! They're showing that they are willing to go above and beyond and are not afraid to put themselves out there! Try it! It's free!
