Dr. Burça Kızılırmak Yakışır is a Professor of Economics at Ankara University in Ankara, Türkiye. Her research has appeared in journals such as Feminist Economics, Women’s Studies International Forum, Applied Economics Letters, and Review of Development Economics. In her latest study published in the Review of Development Economics, entitled "Relative contributions of indirect taxes and inflation on inequality: What does the Turkish data reveal," she alongside her co-authors assess how changes in indirect taxes and household inflation rates contribute to real consumption inequality, with a focus on the case of Turkey. Her research plays a crucial role in discussions related to women in the workforce, disparities in wages between genders, and broader economic inequality issues, all of which significantly affect our modern society. #dukeuniversity #dukestudents #dukeu #SamuelDuboisCookCenter #SocialEquity #DukeSocialEq #equity #inequality #research

I listened a talk given by Jamil Nasir at CPPG of FC College University Lahore regarding his book “Development Challenges of Pakistan: Constraints and Choices.” Jamil Nasir is a Civil Servant who joined Central Superior Services of Pakistan in mid 1990s. He has over three decades of service experience in the public sector. He is an Economist by training with additional academic background in the areas of Economic Governance, Economic Policy Management, Public Policy, Business management and WTO laws. He is a graduate of Columbia University, USA, with Masters in Economic Policy Management. He is a Senior Fellow of Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) and a member of its advisory board. He has authored several books and contributed papers and researched essays in the reputed journals. By listening the talk of the author on his book “Development Challenges of Pakistan: Constraints and Choices”, the book comes up with some suggestive vibes. This book aims to enhance the understanding of the academia, policymakers, and general readers about the development challenges and constraints on long- term economic growth of Pakistan. It offers policy prescriptions, based on relevant empirical studies and data analysis, for overcoming such constraints. The book's content is also relevant to other developing countries, particularly of South Asian region, as comparative data of a number of countries has been analysed on various development themes and issues. Besides emphasising the centrality of equitable economic growth and human resource development, themes like culture of growth, rising inequalities, misallocation of land and talent, developmental bureaucracy, judicial system, rent-seeking, social capital, fiscal capacities, and militancy etc, also finds detailed exposition while exploring intimate causal connections of the said variables with economic growth. The author discussed the development challenges of Pakistan and recommended solutions for economic growth and development. Like many other bureaucrats, I found that the author was more interested in taking the pride of writing a book probably for rest of his progenies to come who will keep commemorating this book. It sounded like the book encapsulates suggestions. The real challenge is, how to achieve these goals. For example he highlighted the figure of number of out of school children and he expressed his concerns, but when it comes to the road map and funds allocation, he did not laid down a way out. Similarly he highlighted other domains like Health, Policy and Governance constraints which were not unique in any way. I liked his identification of unquantifiable facts like personal integrity, character, honesty, professionalism which people must accompany in general.
