The journey towards unraveling systemic risk continues. Our paper entitled "Is Default Risk Contagious? Evidence from Global Energy Leaders and environmentally Conscious Energy Firms" just appeared in Computational Economics (ABDC 'B'/SCOPUS Q1/SSCI IF 1.9). In this paper, we examine the default risk spillover for two groups of global energy firms, including top energy firms from seven different sectors as well as energy firms scoring highest in terms of environment disclosure. Many thanks to coauthors Wajahat Azmi, PhD, M. Kabir Hassan, Shamsher Mohd. I am pleased to share this new publication in the prestigious journal Environmental and Resource Economics (Q1 in Economics) in #Springer with my coauthors Mehmet Pinar and Chaoyi Chen from University of Seville and John Von Neumann University respectively. The main findings of the study show that to increase the effectiveness of green patents in reducing energy intensity, governments should improve their institutional quality, such as the rule of law and control of corruption, and renewable energy levels. However, institutionally weak countries should promote market-based environmental policies (e.g., feed-in tariffs to promote renewable energy, fossil fuel taxes and emission certification) to attract foreign cleaner technology. https://lnkd.in/dhd6G6ea I had the opportunity to present the preliminary results of this research in 2023 in the XI INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC SYMPOSIUM/Green investments for the energy transition organized by Chair of Energy Sustainability (IEB - Institut d'Economia de Barcelona, Universitat de Barcelona & Funseam-Fundación para la Sostenibilidad Energética y Ambiental) with a great feedback from researchers all over the world. #institutionalquality #energyintensity #greeninvestments #renewableenergy

Jim Stanford, Economist & Director at The Australia Institute & Centre for Future Work will be one of the opening speakers at the 2024 National Manufacturing Summit. Jim’s presentation will focus on the theme of the Summit: making the renewable energy manufacturing revolution a reality. Since last year’s Summit, Australia has recognised the opportunities of the global energy transition for our manufacturing sector, and now policy change to encourage action (namely the Future Made in Australia Act) is coming. The question remains: how do we actually make it happen? Jim will discuss what each ‘stakeholder’ – government, business, labour, the education sector, and the broader community – must consider and how they stand to benefit from success. Jim founded the Centre for Future Work in 2016 after over 20 years with Unifor, Canada’s largest private-sector trade union. He is the Harold Innis Industry Professor in Economics at McMaster University and Honorary Professor at the University of Sydney. Jim holds a PhD in Economics from the New School and an MPhil from Cambridge. You can catch Jim presenting alongside Charlie Joyce, Researcher at the Carmichael Centre and Centre for Future Work. With tickets selling fast, now is the time to register. https://lnkd.in/giwr_bm #NationalManufacturingSummit #RenewableEnergy #WeldAustralia #InnovativeEconomy #SustainableIndustry

It was great to hear from Liz Fletcher today and learn about the impactful outcomes of her research. Liz emphasised the pivotal role consumers play in driving the energy transition, underscoring the importance of comprehensive, bottom-up consumer research. Her findings shed light on how this research directly influences the shaping of regulations, policies, and decision-making processes. For transformative change to occur, it is crucial to equally integrate technical, economic, and consumer perspectives into decision-making processes. Symposium on "Green Opportunities for the Energy Sector" Economics of Energy and Environmental Policy https://lnkd.in/gNYz2TVx The papers in this symposium highlight the diversity of issues and options present in green transition and the critical role of policy in selected areas of green transition. While the topics covered are not exhaustive, they reflect the need for research in some of the less frequently discussed aspects, but important, of opportunities and policies for green energy transition. Several of the papers present the cases of transition in developing countries reflecting the green transition issues in these economies

💡Our latest publication in Environmental and Resource Economics, co-authored with Dr. Nikos Chatzistamoulou titled "Is Green Transition in Europe Fostered by Energy and Environmental Efficiency Feedback Loops? The Role of Eco-Innovation, Renewable Energy and Green Taxation". This paper dives into the intricate dynamics of resource efficiency measures within the #EU-28, revealing the complex interplay of #feedbackloops, #greentechnologies, and #policytools. Our findings challenge conventional wisdom, showcasing how horizontal policies may hinder rather than foster the green transition. Chatzistamoulou, N., & Koundouri, P. (2024). 🌱 Exciting News from the Eller Partnerships Office! 🌱 We are delighted to announce the official launch of the Consortium for Environmentally Resilient Business (CERB), a groundbreaking initiative uniting experts in environmental economics, sustainable business practices, and energy consumption. Led by co-directors Ashley Langer and Derek Lemoine, both distinguished professors in economics, CERB brings together a coalition of scholars from the University of Arizona, The University of Texas at Austin, The Ohio State University, and Cornell University. Together, we are dedicated to addressing pressing climate change challenges and exploring innovative solutions for businesses, policymakers, and communities. In her opening statement, Ashley Langer emphasized the urgency of our mission: "Until 10-15 years ago, economists thought of climate change as something for the future. But climate change is already here, so now we should be able to use data to figure out what climate change is already doing in Arizona and the United States.” CERB's primary focus will be on the intersection of climate change and business, particularly within the utility industry. We are proud to partner with industry leaders such as San Diego Gas & Electric, Tucson Electric Power, and Pacific Gas and Electric Company to tackle shared challenges and pioneer new opportunities. Join us in shaping a more environmentally resilient future. Together, we can make a difference.🌍 #CERB #ClimateChange #BusinessImpact
