Center for Democracy & Technology’s Post

NEW RESEARCH: A new CDT report from the Civic Tech team explores how data and technology can help mitigate problems in child welfare agencies. It offers recommendations to maximize benefits and minimize harms. Across the country, child welfare agencies work with over 390,000 youth in foster care annually. They ensure safety and wellbeing but face challenges like agency coordination, biased data, and high social worker turnover. To tackle these issues, agencies are using data and #AI tools. While promising, these technologies risk entrenching racial and socioeconomic disparities, stigmatizing foster youth, and compromising #privacy. Recommendations include identifying potential harms, enhancing data governance, and vetting third-party vendors. These steps are crucial as more agencies adopt AI-powered tools.
