Sometimes a crazy idea is what it takes. This summer, Yakima Valley Tourism has a pop-up info booth each Sunday at the Downtown Yakima Farmers Market. Since this last Sunday was Father's Day I came up with this idea to work the shift and tell dad jokes! It was a hit with folks walking up just for a joke, and then staying to learn more. Working a booth can be tiring and mind numbing with streams of folks walking by, whether at a huge industry trade show or the just the local market. I learned years ago a lot of lessons on how to successfully stage and work a booth, but here are a few tips: You have to be engaging, create a hook or niche to catch their eyes but most of all, be relevant and approachable without being obnoxious or pushy. Free dad jokes on Fathers Day was a fun way to open a conversation and engage with folks. And if you need a new dad joke, reach out; I have quite a few good ones!

This story continues to inspire me ... 😉 Two shoe salesmen were sent to a new, emerging country where no one wore shoes.  One quickly sent word back, “No one wears shoes here—no opportunity.”  The other saw it differently and excitedly reported, “No one wears shoes—what an amazing opportunity!” This simple story is what triggered my passion for sales and why we started 2DUTCH Hospitality Collective. Some years ago, before I had my interview with the Franchisor to grant me a license to buy the café, I sweated over what they would ask. I couldn’t make a coffee, and I couldn’t even boil an egg. They said, "We can teach you the technical skills like making a great coffee and preparing an egg hollandaise. But when everyone else wants a coffee, are you prepared to get into the café and be there when it matters?" I said, "Yes, I am." They then said, "We don’t want you to make coffees or work in the kitchen, but we want you to know what is happening in terms of sufficient resources to get the orders done with high quality and to take corrective action when necessary." It turned out they were looking for business management skills like people management, customer management, and supplier management. I got the license after a few weeks and started my baptism by fire of owning and managing a small business café where the buck stopped with me. It was the best schooling in business management I have ever had. All those management experiences and theories I had helped when I started were good, but I now put it all on the line. With my family relying on me, my friends telling me to stay as an Accountant, and an uncertain future into something I had never done, I knew I had to be a great owner and manager, not just a good one. What inspired me to do this? The thrill of a business adventure, competing in the real business world where I made the decisions, and the desire for an experience where I dealt with people. I wanted to make them happy with the hospitality we provided and see their instant happy faces when they were really satisfied. Would I do it again? Absolutely!!! When you are confident about what you bring to the table, the right people will sit with you. This is a picture of a few of my local partners in wine. Last night, we got together and drank wine. In the wine business, we call this "research". 😉 Every person in this picture works a full-time career, in addition to growing an e-commerce wine business. A dental hygienist, Commercial Banker, realtor, SBA loan officer, local business owner, office manager, physical therapist, and health and wellness expert are all represented above. We are all busy. We all have families. We all have tons of responsibilities. None of us thought we had time to add "one more thing". But our "whys" became bigger than our excuses and we chose to prioritize this opportunity. We share a love for wine and each of us wants to build something of our own. Some of us wanted a plan B. Some were looking for an extra stream of income. Others launched this business as a fun "hobby job". I’m on vacation today in Italy! 🍂 For most companies, the goal is revenue growth. For me and 99% of you (maybe 100% of you), career success is defined by the growth we help to deliver. The goal is very different for my winemaker friends. They aren’t trying to make and sell as much wine as possible. In fact, they’re doing the exact opposite. One of my friends hired 25 people to cut individual berries off clusters in the 6 weeks leading up to harvest, reducing the vineyard’s yield by 70%. 🍇 That’s millions of dollars they’re leaving on the table. Why? It’s pretty straightforward, actually. To them, quality is the most important thing. They know that if the quality is high, sales will continue long into the future.
