Olympic champions - decades in the making Every time the Olympics roll around, I find myself fixed to the TV watching both familiar (track and field, swimming, etc.) and unfamiliar (table tennis, speed climbing, badminton, handball, etc) events. Aside from the fact that all the participants are bona-fide Olympians, they all share one common trait - they have all devoted many many years of preparation and hard work, sometimes through hardships and amid obscurity to get a chance to reach the podium and hear their country's anthem. Is it thrilling or glamourous to get up at dawn to work out and practice every day? No, of course not, but they do it anyway because they know that it's absolutely necessary just to have a shot at making the team, let alone win a gold medal. Does anyone think that any Olympian could possibly have started preparing a month ago, a year ago? No, that would be utter nonsense. At the same time, I'm often contacted by business owners looking to sell their business ASAP, right away, next month, with no preparation or any idea of how buyer will view and value their company. "Well, XYZ sold for 9x Ebitda so I should be able to get that, right?" That's like thinking you can just walk (or more accurately, swim) onto the Olympic water polo team and get yourself a medal. Selling a business takes preparation, analysis, and sometimes changing some things to make the business more valuable to potential buyers. Unless you've made those efforts, as unglamourous as they can be, you might as well be watching from your couch. "The key is not the will to win... everybody has that. I love tennis, my husband loves tennis and my son loves tennis holidays. Next week I am back on the court, straight into a match! I will have some practice hits this week and I have been increasing my fitness and strength through regular daily exercise every morning for the last few weeks, so hopefully my comeback won’t be too painful. It is also the start of Wimbledon and I’m always motivated by watching some of my favourite players. What’s sure is that the players have the FOMO : Fear of Missing Out. That’s what this statement is about. Let me explain. First of all Alcaraz is in a special situation: his year has been nothing short of extraordinary—winning back-to-back Roland-Garros and Wimbledon titles, and reaching the Olympic Games final. But that success has come at a steep price: exhaustion. Physically, mentally, the toll is heavy. But yes the truth is, event not winning Slams in a row, many players feel the same. The FOMO is real in tennis. If you skip a tournament, someone else might pass you in the rankings. So, they push themselves to the limit, often playing more than their bodies can handle. Different surfaces, constant travel, jet lag—it all adds up. But here’s the catch: playing too much can actually hurt your ranking more than help it. When you’re overworked, you’re not playing your best tennis. The key to lasting success isn't grinding through every tournament. It’s about being strategic, pacing yourself, and showing up at your absolute best for the biggest events. If you want to be great, you have to prioritize.
