What is Microsatellite? A microsatellite is a tract of repetitive DNA in which certain DNA motifs are repeated, typically 5\_50 times. Microsatellites occur at thousands of locations within an organism's genome. Microsatellite, as related to genomics, refers to a short segment of DNA, usually one to six or more base pairs in length, that is repeated multiple times in succession at a particular genomic location. These DNA sequences are typically non-coding. The number of repeated segments within a microsatellite sequence often varies among people, which makes them useful as polymorphic markers for studying inheritance patterns in families or for creating a DNA fingerprint from crime scene samples. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are valuable tools for determining ancestry due to their abundance and variability across populations. These single-base variations in DNA sequences occur throughout the genome and can be inherited from ancestors. Certain SNPs are more prevalent in specific geographic or ethnic groups, creating distinctive genetic patterns. By analyzing an individual's SNP profile and comparing it to reference databases of known population groups, researchers can estimate ancestral origins. This process involves examining hundreds of thousands of SNPs simultaneously using microarray technology or sequencing methods. The resulting data is then interpreted using statistical algorithms and machine learning techniques to provide a detailed breakdown of an individual's genetic ancestry, often expressed as percentages from different populations or regions.
