Today we acknowledge WCMU Public Media for their outstanding Michigan News Group Internship program. I am impressed! Though three aspects really caught my eye in reading about it, the fact that dignity was so palpable made me proud of their program (which I have nothing to do with). First, interns have 2 weeks of training on audio editing, recording, and broadcast writing. This sets them up to be successful. As a result, just 4 interns produced 130 stories in 13 weeks! Remarkable. It speaks to the principle of Intentionality. Second, they were supported in going out into the real world and learning by doing. This speaks to the principle of Empowerment. Lastly, it was all about Discovery. They never stopped learning. In designing an internship, where you are coming from is more important than where you are going, don't you agree? The principle of Generosity is present in this quote: "Watching them grow as journalists has been one of the more fulfilling aspects of my professional career thus far. I love popping up in unexpected places. This summer's unexpected place? The AFRO-American Newspapers. Yesterday marked the last day of a 10-week experience as an intern journalist. As a cognitive science and computer science double major, I've fielded a lot of questions the past few months about why I chose to intern at a newspaper. I have a normal answer to that — I just wanted communications experience — but oftentimes, I focus my answer more on the ability of cross-industry involvement to evoke pivotal changes in my approach to work within fields more directly related to me. This summer, I've learned things about journalism that shocked me (would you believe writing is actually the least important part of putting an article together?). But beyond that, constant deadlines forced me to confront my tendency to demand perfection from my writing, as I found that getting the point across as quickly as possible is much more important in journalism than expressing that point in an eloquent way. I faced my fear of approaching people, as the many, many on-the-street interviews I've done involve walking up to random people and hoping they'll be nice and answer my questions (people are surprisingly willing to do this, actually). Above all, I've gained a newfound respect for the role journalism plays in society and for the fearlessness with which journalists approach the world. I'd also like to extend a special thanks to all of my fellow interns, whose camaraderie made the stressful portions of this internship bearable, and also to the InBaltimore internship program, run by The Life Design Lab at Homewood - Johns Hopkins University, which made this whole thing possible. Today is recognized as international intern day. As I reflect on my time as a news reporter intern at Nationwide News Network, here are fifteen lessons that I learnt: 1. How to tighten my script - Of course this applies to writing but sharpen your craft in whatever your field requires. 2. Press through obstacles - At one point I had to move from desk to desk to get work done. 3. Be prepared to share your input - I recall saying something under my breath in production meeting and I was called on unexpectedly to share. 4. You may experience a situation that literally touch on your insecurities; Keep going. 5. Learn from unexpected people -We sometimes go in thinking that the gems are going to come from the boss, manager, senior reporter etc. A bus driver may surprise you. 6. People are watching - To complete my final class before graduation I couldn't enter the workspace at the usual time. Someone outside of the newsroom noticed and jokingly asked me about it. 7. Ask for what you want - I needed to come in a bit later to complete the class. I asked and it was granted. 8. Learn quick - I was introduced to new audio editing software that I had to learn to use fast in order to meet newsroom deadline. 9. Ask for help - When the software gave me a warm time I turned to the person next to me. Thank God he was welcoming. 10. Advocate for yourself - If there is something that you want to work on, take initiative and speakup about it. 11. You may think something is not your best work and that's when your complimented - I voiced a report that I was iffy about but based on feedback it was good. 12. Issues may occur that stirs up negative feelings. For example, being overlooked - Don't let that deter you. Take a walk, a deep breath and affirm yourself. 13. Unexpected reward- Simply put, I thought it would be six weeks without a dime but I received a weekly stipend. 14. Soak up information on all things - Be in the know. 15. Nobody is holding your hand- I found internship to be a learn as you go and sharpen your skill experience. My advise is to come prepared. As a student I worked at NCU FM, which taught me to write for radio and work overall in media. I'm proud of the work that I was able to get done and grateful for the experience.

Helleland & Tormod Utne “How should journalism education deal with evolving newsrooms? – Learning experiences from internships through online collaborative tools” is published Open Access in Journal of Media Practice and Education. https://lnkd.in/drVCP5uF The article diverges from the trend of newsrooms downsizing, reduction of in-house staff, and increased remote digital collaboration. Furthermore, it examines how these evolved newsrooms are perceived as learning spaces for journalist students doing their internship training. Spoiler alert!: The students aren`t fund of it. It is not their preferred way of learning. They wish to learn and work in busy and vibrant newsrooms with physical colleagues to collaborate with and support them. This represents challenges both journalism educators and the industry should consider when developing their curriculum or wishing to attract new talents. I just spoke to a friend's daughter, a rising college senior about to begin a PR agency internship. She asked some great questions, one of which was who do I think are the best PR people and why (their backgrounds). I've been in the industry a fairly long time and have worked with lots of comms people--some great, some good, some average, some not-so-average. The best PR people I've worked with include two former segment producers for local network TV affiliates, a former broadcast business reporter, a former ski instructor and a college soccer player who studied accounting. Why do I think they're the best? It's because they know how to quickly craft concise and compelling stories, and they're incredibly pragmatic. #PR #publicrelations #careers

Importance of #Internship in #journalism: Folks, especially the journalism #students who actually want to step in to this profession, I want to tell you how important is internship to grow in your career. I was compelled to write on this after witnessing the interns coming to my office in the last few years. Each one of them used to come to office just to browse free office internet and listen music on Spotify. Without putting any effort to do a story, they just passed the period of 30 days or did only what was asked by the bureau chief with no extra efforts to show their interest in working as a full fledged journalist. Finished the period, got the internship certificate and episode over. Now let me share my experience of internship when I was a mass comm student. I pursued two internships in the same office of a leading national English daily. I was made to sit in the morning meetings with all the seniors/on-roll staffers, by the editor. Pitched story ideas, went to field to work on them and then filed the stories to collect bylines. Despite being a mere intern, I was assigned almost all the routine work of a proper on roll journalist and I never said No to it. Worked from 10.30am till 7pm. Was dead serious with my work and it paid off at the end when the bureau chief offered job to my college friend and me, as we both were pursuing the internships together. Though, it is a different story that we couldn't join as it was a different city from the one where our college was and moreover it was the last semester which was filled with numerous projects. I completed my Masters, and then appeared for my first job interview in another national English daily. Boom, the editor who took my interview was the same under which I had pursued my internship in that other daily. And because, I did my internship with all possible dedication, he was aware of my work. He asked nothing during the interview apart from exchanging greetings. He only saw the internship bylines which I had carried with me (I still have them with me in hard copies of the newspaper.) Boom, I was selected... So, crux of the story is, always take your internships seriously if you really want to build a career in this profession. Because you would learn the basics and take the first step in your career. You will be a step ahead in your first job in comparison to your colleagues who joined with you but without a proper internship. You need not start from the scratch. Regards and best wishes...
