The resulting report calls for a better understanding of social media’s influence on development and makes specific recommendations for policymakers and other leaders in the categories of design, training and education, online harassment, and research. Over the past year, an ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine examined the research and produced this detailed report exploring that effect and laying out recommendations for policymakers, regulators, industry, and others in an effort to maximize the good and minimize the bad. Focus areas include platform design, transparency and accountability, digital media literacy among young people and adults, online harassment, and supporting researchers.

Today I hosted a breakfast for over 50 ISH fathers. I started the breakfast with a presentation on "What Parents Need to Know about Social Media". Next, I gave everyone a list of guiding questions to facilitate small group conversations. The first question was, what are your best memories of interacting with your father? The participants could then chose from a list of questions including the following. --What is the hardest part of parenting a child at this age? --What strategies do you use or would you suggest to get your child to talk with you? --What do you do when your child misbehaves? --How do you support your child’s academic achievement? I prerecorded a video of my presentation about social media and emailed it out to all parents. The session appeared to be well received by those in attendance and a number of the participants have asked us to host more events for fathers. For those who are interested, you can view the recording through this link and below are some of the resources I shared with parents. https://lnkd.in/dbr3m-xZ Keeping Teens Safe on Social Media: What Parents Should know to Protect Their Kids - American Psychological Association Social Media and Youth Mental Health - The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory Social Media Design: 4 Things Parents Need to Know - Healthychildren.org Social Media Safety and Kids: A Parents; Guide - Kapersky (this is a company selling internet safety products. Social media, like any technology, has both positive and negative effects. And those effects are determined not by the technology itself but by the people using and profiting off of it. To ensure the net result of social media is positive, we, as users, must prioritize media literacy while media companies must work just as hard to mitigate negative effects as they do to increase their profits. Unfortunately, both are easier said than done. https://lnkd.in/eThQP23p

The impact of social media on young people has garnered significant attention recently. While there are certain advantages to its use, there's also concern about the excessive amount of time spent on social media platforms. 📲 Overall, the best outcomes occur when there are limits and boundaries around how youth use social media. Discussions and coaching between children and adults around the appropriate use of social media are essential. 🗣️ To learn more about how you can help youth engage in healthy and appropriate social media use, check out our most recent blog post: https://lnkd.in/equk2utf #socialmediatips #blog #socialmedia
