Today marks the beginning of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. 16 Days of Activism is a global campaign that began in 1991 and aims to prevent violence by changing underlying issues. We can prevent violence against women by transforming the culture that enables it. We can all work towards a community that is free from gender-based violence - it starts with respect. Respect is: • Choosing not to laugh at jokes that put women down. • Treating your partner as an equal. • Believing victim survivors. • Promoting equality and respect on and off the sports field. • Everyone feeling safe to go for a run or walk home. • Closing the gender pay gap. • Role modelling healthy ideas of what it means to be a man. It's not just one day. Incredible People is passionate about supporting charities that provide sustainable opportunities and pathways to greater economic inclusion for women and girls everywhere. Not just on International Women’s Day, but throughout the year — because it takes a lot more than just one day a year to bring about change. Perth Foundation for Women Ltd - dedicated to uplifting disadvantaged women and girls across Australia by providing essential support, services, and resources, creating a more equitable and empowering future for all. Operation Sunshine WA - volunteer led charity helping women and children displaced by family and domestic violence and/or under the care of child protection services in Western Australia. On average, one woman is killed in Australia every 4 (four) days – an almost 30 per cent increase compared to the year before. The prime minister has declared violence against women a national crisis and even in the time it has taken me to write these words, two more women have been slain.  If you are an Australian woman, aged between 24 and 44 years of age, you are more likely to experience domestic violence than to suffer a health issue related to smoking, drinking or being overweight. These are grim statistics, and this is not a quick fix. But apathy has no place in this conversation. On Friday, May 24th, my colleagues and I partnered with #RizeUpAustralia and came together in solidarity with women experiencing domestic and family violence around our nation. We undertook training on how to spot the signs that someone may be experiencing coercive control and sexual or domestic abuse. We shared experiences, discussed suggestions on how to approach conversations, and our hopes for the future of women everywhere. Then we rolled up our sleeves: - creating hampers full to the brim with hundreds of donated items - assembling furniture for donation - raising much needed funds with an on-site BBQ - We even sent a small team of volunteers to participate in a life changing #teambuilding activity, setting up emergency accommodation with the #RizeUpAustralia team. If our actions make a difference in just one family’s life today, we believe we have taken steps towards making the world a better, safer place.  Being able to do so while living out the multiple attributes of kindness our Sandoz family embody, such as collaboration, empathy, humility, and compassion is the icing on the cake. 🚀 Announcement: The "Freedom to Roam" Campaign is Live! 🚀 We're excited to announce the launch of the "Freedom to Roam - Empowering Women’s Journeys" campaign by The Stay Safe Global Charitable Trust. This initiative is dedicated to transforming public spaces into safe havens for women, free from fear and intimidation. We invite you to join hands with us in this critical mission to ensure safety and dignity for all. Together, we can make a tangible difference! The "Freedom to Roam" campaign is born from an urgent need to address the systemic barriers preventing women from being safe in public spaces. Despite significant progress in various sectors, women continue to face disproportionate risks of harassment and violence on public transport. Our campaign, which has already run with a small sample who provided astounding insights, is a response to these persistent threats, driven by a commitment to social justice and equality, and the findings will be fed back to the Head of Women’s Safety and Inclusive Travel at the UK Department for Transport. In the lead up to White Ribbon Day and 16 Days of Activism, now we are asking for more women to provide their insights. We recognise that the emotional toll of being unsafe constrains women’s autonomy and undermines their right to fully participate in society. Through this campaign, we aim to dismantle these barriers by advocating for comprehensive policy changes, fostering community collaboration, and amplifying women’s voices to inform meaningful action. This is not just a solitary cause, but a movement to uplift and protect the most basic rights of women across communities. Women and girls should be able to walk down a street without fear, study without intimidation, work without harassment, and use the internet without enduring abuse. Yet, an estimated 736 million women globally – almost one in three – have been subjected to physical and or sexual violence at least once in their lifetime. In Australia, women face a 1 in 3 chance of being assaulted, and 1 in 2 will experience sexual harassment. These are not just statistics; it’s a national disgrace. White Ribbon Day - Together we can prevent violence against women and girls Violence against women and girls is rooted in harmful masculine norms. Starting with men, we must address the attitudes and behaviours that contribute to a fear of violence for women in their day-to-day lives. This White Ribbon Day, we’re encouraging men to hold themselves accountable to women, and to each other, so we can affect positive behaviour change to transform harmful cultures. Gender equality is key to making this culture change happen.
