Ever since Axel Brown was a kid, he had always wanted to change the field of social work, and after his time in the military, he enrolled at UCCS to begin his pursuit of changing the system. With the UCCS community by his side, Axel found friends and mentors to join him on his journey to create a better world. Axel is now the former Student Body President. 🔵 Happy Columbus Day: A Tribute to the Navigator Who Changed the World 🌎 Today, we commemorate Christopher Columbus—a figure whose legacy has been heavily debated, politicized, and, unfortunately, misunderstood. While it’s true that Columbus was not a perfect leader and made many mistakes as a governor, we cannot overlook his monumental role in shaping history and the world we know today. ✨ Columbus was, at heart, a sailor—a visionary who dared to navigate uncharted waters when the known world believed the oceans were filled with monsters and edges that dropped into the abyss. His courage and persistence didn’t just cross the Atlantic; they shattered barriers and connected worlds that had been separated for millennia. 🚢 Yet, he remains a victim of what historians call "The Black Legend"—a wave of anti-Spanish propaganda that painted him as an unequivocal villain. While there is no doubt that there were dark sides to his story, his character and accomplishments were also distorted, exaggerated, and misrepresented by political agendas of his time and beyond. What’s often left out of the narrative is the fact that Columbus died impoverished, stripped of his titles, and betrayed by those who once celebrated his discoveries. He was a man whose courage was instrumental in bridging two continents and yet was dismissed as a failed governor rather than honored as the exceptional navigator he truly was. As we recognize Columbus today, it’s not to whitewash history, but to appreciate his daring spirit and how his voyage laid the groundwork for the interconnected world we now live in. His legacy goes beyond the controversies—it’s about the courage to set sail, the determination to pursue the impossible, and the willingness to challenge what’s known for the hope of something greater. So, on this Columbus Day, let’s take a moment to honor the real Christopher Columbus—a man of contradictions, yes, but also of incredible vision and resolve. Not everyone is called to this task, but only the man who has the confidence of the people, and even he only when the time is ripe. He must then proceed in the right way, so that he gladdens the people and, by enlightening them, prevents excesses. Furthermore, he must be quite free of selfish aims and must really relieve the need of the people. Only then does he have nothing to regret. Times change, and with them their demands. Thus the seasons change in the course of the year. In the world cycle also there are spring and autumn in the life of peoples and nations, and these call for social transformations. 🎶🩰
