Andrew Aleman, LCSW’s experience, perspective, and knowledge are a few of the many reasons I will not miss this three part series on social justice and ethics. Looking forward to it.

Upholding the Pillars of Ethical Research Compliance Navigating the intricate realm of research compliance, we commit to a path that goes beyond simple conformity to legal requirements—it signifies a reassertion of our intrinsic ethical values in scholarly inquiry. As custodians of human value and forerunners in safeguarding the purity of scientific endeavors, we employ rigorous protocols to ensure the safety of our participants and the veracity of our research outcomes. Safeguarding Human Dignity: Implementing moral standards through Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) to protect the rights and welfare of research participants. Learning from the Past: Addressing and drawing lessons from past ethical missteps, like the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, to shape a future committed to uprightness. Ensuring Transparency and Care: Highlighting the critical importance of openness and the well-being of subjects as foundational elements of our research ethos. Our resolve in fostering a culture imbued with accountability and transparency is not simply aspirational—it’s the benchmark we uphold. This is the way we ensure that the pioneering discoveries we make advance both the realm of human understanding and the welfare of society. Together, let us advance the causes of #ResearchCompliance and #EthicalResearch for a more enlightened and responsive mode of exploration.

I am very excited about teaching a new Master’s course on Ethical Issues in Public Policy at American University. In addition to readings and discussions, we will use case studies to explore the underlying administrative and policy issues that have ended in disasters – or the inverse, successes – and to learn from these events to achieve more effective management. Rather than a course on ethics per se, we will examine and think about the appropriate execution of responsibilities in the public sphere. Discover some examples in this short marketing video prepared by the School of Public Affairs, American University.

As city managers, we are often asked for advice from our own local officials—but what do we do when asked to provide advice to officials from other communities? In the March Management Messenger Monthly, Joe Smolinski, City Manager in Mansfield, covers that topic in his discussion of Tenet 2 of the TCMA Code of Ethics as it relates to providing advice to other local governments. Fascinating sub 15min chat with Sue Robertson who led Australia’s APS Integrity Taskforce. Sue’s take is fresh - relying less on rules, procedures and red tape, more on cultures of contestibility - is the way forward. Solid advice for many leaders in public life - and perhaps a useful factor to consider for the current Think Tank review led by Peter Varghese for Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet? What is the integrity and contestibility Australia needs in strategic policy going forward - and how important is investing in our culture of leadership to get there?
For The Readout, Lab CEO Bridi Rice sat with head of the APS Integrity Taskforce Sue Robertson and discussed how investing in the psychological safety and contestability of the public service will deliver better foreign policy results for Australia. In today's turbulent times, we often confront the question: why is the backlash against Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts so intense? The answer is not simple nor comfortable. Our response often unsettles and disappoints; we assert that the powerful logics of white supremacy persist, that justice bends towards equity only through intentional effort, that diversifying personnel and adding programs alone won’t dismantle these entrenched ideologies that perpetuate harm, yet many expect quick fixes like diversifying personnel or adding programs to dismantle deeply ingrained systems. It's tempting to blame external factors—the "bad ones" or the "haters." However, the truth is more complex. The resistance to DEI is deeply rooted in this nation's historical commitment to upholding the values of white supremacy. This resistance is not new but follows a historical pattern of pushback against progress. The real challenge lies in our willingness to deeply understand the problem and implement strategic interventions that address its roots. It requires us to confront our complicity and reluctance to grapple with power dynamics. We must acknowledge our investment in narratives that deflect responsibility and externalize blame. This struggle is not just about making institutions less racist; it's about engaging in a broader struggle for liberation. Are we prepared to nurture the disciplines and imaginative capacities needed to sustain ourselves in this struggle? Are we prepared to surface and disrupt our individual, collective, and structural investment in the logics of white supremacy? If you find yourself grappling with these questions, if you're confronting these dynamics head-on, there is still time to join Crossroads Antiracism Organizing & Training for one of our upcoming meet-ups in Seattle: June 18th at 10:00 am PT or June 22nd at 9:00 am PT. Let's explore together how we can effectively address these challenges and work towards true equity and inclusion. Register here: https://lnkd.in/gpJAKcfB There is a $25 registration fee. Hope to see you there.
