Grape Varieties: - Champagne is typically made from three primary grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. - Chardonnay: Known for its elegance and finesse, Chardonnay is the only white grape permitted in Champagne production. It is primarily grown in the Côte des Blancs and produces light, crisp, and mineral-driven Champagnes. - Pinot Noir: Provides structure, body, and aging potential to Champagne. It is the dominant grape variety in the Montagne de Reims and Vallée de la Marne regions and contributes red fruit aromas and flavors to the wine. - Pinot Meunier: Adds fruitiness and roundness to Champagne. It is mostly grown in the Vallée de la Marne and provides youthful, approachable characteristics to the wine. Viticultural Areas: 1. Bordeaux 2023 seems very much like a two-tier campaign. There are wines where there is interest, they are priced well, and they are ticking through. But there are plenty where, for one reason or another, there's little incentive for customers to buy en primeur rather than purchase something ready for drinking. One wine that has piqued my interest is Château de Fieuzal from Pessac-Léognan. I recall the 2010 being especially memorable, but the 2023 is the most compelling since then. At just £120 per 6 IB, Château de Fieuzal 2023 offers exceptional value for money. With a score of 94-96 by The Wine Advocate, it's only surpassed in Pessac by Carmes Haut Brion and Haut Brion, yet it's the most affordable vintage on the market. How a rose encapsulates Champagne Gardet’s philosophy 23 MAY 2024 By Michael Huband The rose adorning Champagne Gardet’s bottles is more than just decoration, representing the terroirs, tradition and family behind the house.A rose, for Champagne Gardet, is more than a romantic gesture. It has become a symbol of all the producer values. It represents family: the owners, the Prieux family, trace their roots to horticulturalists. It represents terroir, giving a name to the premier cru village of Chigny-les-Roses where Champagne Gardet is based. It even nods to tradition, as roses were once planted in Champagne vineyards as a warning system for mildew. As a smaller producer in a renowned region, the rose has become an emblem of the identity that Champagne Gardet is committed to preserving. Founded as a family company in 1895, Champagne Gardet has always relied on a close-knit team. Working closely with skilled winemakers, the Prieux family continues that tradition. The husband-and-wife team, Christophe and Nathalie, lead a small force of 20 employees, including their daughter, Clémence. The house’s vineyards are also integral to its identity. Its 10 hectares of owned vineyards, centred around Chigny-les-Roses, are supplemented by grapes from long-term, trusted growers. As well as letting terroir inform its style, Champagne Gardet has worked to ensure that 50% of the grapes it grows or sources are now farmed organically or with high environmental value certification. Tradition, perhaps most of all, guides the approach. Modern technology, such as disgorgement machinery and gyropalettes, is used alongside techniques like oak foudre ageing and manual riddling. As winemaker Stéphanie Sucheyre explains: “I see myself as the custodian of a precious tradition, but a resolutely modern custodian.” The traditional impulse is strongest in Champagne Gardet’s extended ageing. Going far beyond the legal minimums, extended lees ageing is vital in achieving the balance of freshness and age that the house seeks. The approach reaches its zenith in the Prestige Charles Gardet Millésime, first made in 1995. The 2008 vintage of the long-aged expression, recently released, is among the last 2008 Champagnes to hit the market. Aged 15 years on the lees, Prestige Charles Gardet Millésime 2008 balances aged complexity with the vintage’s characteristic acidity. With no malolactic fermentation, its freshness has been preserved, even with the extended lees contact. The blend, 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir, exclusively from grand cru and premier cru villages, was chosen for its structure and potential to age into an exceptional wine. The judges at The Champagne Masters agreed; this year, the wine received a Gold medal. The 747 is the new release for Jacquesson's 2024 'Programme,' as they call it. The 700 series represents an interesting approach to non-vintage Champagnes, aiming to release the best cuvée each year anew and no longer adhering to a specific style. The logic behind this decision is apparently that the 700 series represents the best cuvée produced in a given year, and therefore, another cuvée with the same vintage cannot be released. Champagne has a terroir character, which, as a natural product, varies from vintage to vintage, origin, and growing conditions. It focuses on the distinct personality of a vintage, which is then stylistically complemented by noble reserve wines from older vintages. The 742 DT is the second new release for Jacquesson's 2024 'Programme. The 700 series Dégorgement Tardif DT : Since Jacquesson has moved to the philosophy of only releasing the 700 series wine every year, they decided to hold some back each year for an extended aging period on the lees with natural cork (sous-liège) and to release this wine as "Dégorgement Tardif" 5 years later. Dizy Terres Rouges 2015 is the only lieu-dit new release for Jacquesson's 2024 'Programme. The lieu-dit (single-vineyard) line-up: Jacquesson also produces tiny quantities of its terroir-based cuvées, each from a unique parcel of vines. These Champagnes showcase some of the region’s finest terroirs and is a must buy for collectors and anyone interested in the terroir of Champagne, demonstrating an extraordinary vinosity and expression of place.
