𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝟭𝟮𝟴: 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿 For all of you who work in professional services or with clients in general - strive to be a "trusted advisor" rather than just a “consultant” or a “salesperson”. The ability to be reliable and to demonstrate genuine concern for the client's success, can transform transactional relationships into partnerships. We’re often too focused on the hard skills, our knowledge, or experience, that we forget all about trust and relationships building. I was reading the book “The Trusted Advisor” by David Maister and team (thanks for the recommendation, Nicholas Runnalls!), in which the concept of the trust equation was introduced - a formula that helps to qualify and understand trust in relationships, particularly in professional or business contexts. 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 = (𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 + 𝘙𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 + 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘺) / 𝘚𝘦𝘭𝘧-𝘖𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: This refers to the believability of the person or their message, often linked to their expertise and honesty. It answers the question, "Do I believe what this person is saying?" 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: This is about dependability and consistency. It answers, "Can I count on this person to do what they say they will do?" 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗰𝘆: This relates to the safety and security of the relationship. It considers whether the other person feels comfortable sharing private or sensitive information, asking, "Do I feel safe sharing my thoughts and feelings with this person?" 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: This factor is about focus, specifically the degree to which a person is focused on themselves versus their clients. At the core of the equation lies the concept, that building trust goes beyond just skills and knowledge... it encompasses reliability, emotional safety, and client-centric focus. Another compelling example from the book involves the use of listening skills to strengthen client relationships, truly engaging with clients by actively listening to their needs and concerns. This approach not only helps in understanding the client's perspective but also in crafting solutions that are more aligned with their goals. As opposed to pushing your own agenda or giving clients what you think they need (as opposed to what they actually need), you showcase your ability to be an attentive listener.
