Aligning Purpose: From Building Walls to Creating Cathedrals
Last week, I attended an event where a comparison was made about purpose in a company.
Two masons are building a wall. When asked what they were doing, the first mason replied: "I am building a wall." The second mason, however, responded: "I am building a cathedral."
This simple comparison highlights a profound challenge in organisations: not everyone sees the true value of their work.
It's crucial to help every team member understand how their role contributes to the bigger picture. By showing the first mason that he is not just laying bricks but building a fundamental wall that will support a magnificent cathedral, we can get everyone aligned in the same direction. Without his wall, the cathedral would fall.
When guiding transformations, I use the principle of linking each role to the next step in the larger goal to ensure everyone understands how their role is essential in building the cathedral.
