Reforming how government works is top of mind in both the US and the UK right now. Read Ed Leech's Policy Unstuck interview to hear his thoughts on what needs to change, and why the Elon Musk approach of deleting entire departments is not the one. Ed also gives the download on why: 👉 Meaningless meetings with political advisers damages your influence. 👉 Transactional meetings are refreshingly good. 👉 Prioritising meetings with officials works over the long-term. https://lnkd.in/e2PPvYVd

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO, who also owns the X social media platform, said that he and Vivek Ramaswamy, a fellow businessman and Trump loyalist, would work to slash federal regulations and make major administrative changes. "We are entrepreneurs, not politicians. We will serve as outside volunteers, not federal officials or employees," Musk and Ramaswamy wrote in their most detailed remarks since Trump named them heads of a new so-called Department of Government Efficiency. Brace for the impact..can't predict what's in store. Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are promising to go to war with the government red tape they say makes it harder to do business as part of their extra-governmental "Department of Government Efficiency" (DOGE). But they will face formidable foes — and perhaps not just from those "unelected bureaucrats" they often pillory. In addition to Washington's historic appetite for new rules, the DOGE leaders could also find that Trump's own campaign promises will lead to the sprouting of some new red tape. If you are a business owner looking forward to government regulation reductions in the years ahead, the industry in which you operate could make all the difference. Here is a comparison of the regulatory costs during Donald Trump's and Joe Biden. The sharp contrast in the regulatory costs between Trump's and Biden's administrations, where Biden's regulatory impact has been significantly higher. THIS IS DISGUSTING. Read that last paragraph in this comment by Bill Gately. So, a US citizen who obviously knows very little about the UK, not only feels entitled to tell me about my own country, but insinuates that its government, which has been in office for barely a month, is somehow responsible for the terrible murders that took place in Southport last week. The combination of ignorance and arrogance is breathtaking and THE EXPLOITATION OF HUMAN MISERY TO MAKE A POLITICAL POINT IS REPELLENT The background, for anyone who is interested. Elon Musk made two recent comments about the recent riots in the UK. In the first he stated that in the UK “Civil war is inevitable”, in the second he labelled the country’s newly-elected Prime Minister as ‘Two-tier Starmer”, perpetuating the myth that the rioters were somehow being treated with disproportionate severity. Arrogance and ignorance yet again, in this case combined with exploitation of a position as owner of a still influential platform. Gately, however, leapt to his defence, claiming that it is just ideologues who blame disinformation. I wrote what I thought was a quite mild comment, but one in which I strongly objected to Musk using his platform to spread lies relating to happenings in a country about which he clearly knows very little. Gately’s response is here to be read. First, an irrelevance about happenings in the US, not my concern. THEN THAT FINAL, REPULSIVE PARAGRAPH

A for-profit approach to public services on national infrastructure doesn't work. Just ask the UK. Rail, energy, water. All mismanaged, underinvested, and costs to the public through the roof. Money diverted to dividends, often to other countries, rather than reinvested into the infrastructure. The US on for-profit prisons, drinking water, etc. Same goes for government. It not about making money, break things, and moving fast. It's about long-term, intelligent investment. In health, energy, transportation, education. It's all about maximising the investments from taxation. Giving back to the public, all the public, not just the ones you like. Looking at gains that might not come, like in education, for 15 to 20 years. No business, or very few are run like this. Nor should they be in most cases. But for a lot of key public sector programs that's exactly how they should be run. This simplified, uninformed, "but I did it here" approach, will only exasperate things, not improve them.
Musk's desire to run the US government like a private business — an approach many private sector professionals have supported for decades — isn't as foolproof as the CEO might think, experts told BI.

Major change in running government from the DOGE. Imagine this, starting in January the US government will start running change management on government spending from the bottom up rather than the top down. This could be a major game-changer. Instead of spending billions "on a bridge to nowhere" in secret with zero media coverage, indescretions are realised in real time and governed up from angry constituents. The hope is that public shaming will result in unacceptable risk for government contract rigging and grafting. Watch from the 3 minute mark - https://lnkd.in/g8BpYM8p

TRIAL BALLOONS AND JAMES BOND VILLAINS "This summer we have witnessed something new and unprecedented. The billionaire owner of a tech platform publicly confronting an elected leader and using his platform to undermine his authority and incite violence. Britain’s 2024 summer riots were Elon Musk’s trial balloon. If Musk chooses to ‘predict’ a civil war in the States, what will that look like? He got away with it. And if you’re not terrified by both the extraordinary supranational power of that and the potential consequences, you should be. If Musk chooses to “predict” a civil war in the States, what will that look like? If he chooses to contest an election result? If he decides that democracy is over-rated? This isn’t sci-fi. It’s literally three months away." The following analysis is good. Just a note : the trial balloon is not unprecedented : Trump, Musk and Putin launched one in Canada, applauding truckers who invaded the Parliament Hill (the week Putin was sending his glorious tanks on Ukraine) . The pretext was antiwax, the demand was the fall of the Prime Minister (compared to Hitler ) by Musk who went on line and the rationale which was repeated by the truckers could be summarized in a four letter words.( It was noisy, utterly ridiculous and ..."trumpian") Back to Musk and the villains enablers : an election will not be enough to neutralize them https://lnkd.in/eEviQg7F

Elon Musk appointed by Trump to head government efficiency. What should he do? One simple suggestion. Each governmental department can no longer use paper and needs to offer an API for all the services they offer to others. Why? No more trees killed and most importantly if each process can be done via APIs it will be easy to measure how efficient each governmental department is. Bad performance will easily be seen in the data and efficiency increasing measures can now be focused on the worst or highest volume areas. Strangely, any country and government could do the sams. The green impact would be enormous and any individual or organisation would see enormous efficiency gains compared to paper form filling. Do you agree? https://lnkd.in/eFiKX3Wh

We’re familiar with Trump’s arc, of course. But why is Musk so important to the right? Why is a reported illicit drug user and unmarried father of 11 children by three women, a man whose social media site, X, is overrun with hatred and pornography, celebrated across the length and breadth of the new right, including parts of the Christian right? In the offline world, paranoia is a liability. It inhibits you from seeing the world clearly. In parts of the online world, you’re considered a rube if you’re not paranoid, if you’re not seeing a leftist plot around every corner, if you’re not believing that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s romance is a Biden administration psy-op that culminated with rigging the Super Bowl. Moreover, a social media-centered movement understands what to think — the marching orders, however incoherent, typically trickle down from Trump — but often breaks down on the why. It’s hard to think of a worse pair of human beings to shape the character of a movement than Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Yet here we are, with Trump controlling the right’s access to power, and Musk increasingly controlling the right’s access to the public. At best, those on the right who wish to maintain that access must cynically ignore, rationalize and minimize the two men’s profound flaws. At worst, it means actively embracing their values to curry favor. Like Trump’s ugly, erratic politics, Musk’s website is substantially contributing to the devolution of thinking on the right. The ideas are in retreat. It’s the attitude that matters now.
