Unlike traditional public goods that often remain static, innovation-based public goods thrive on continuous advancement. They adapt and grow as new technologies emerge, as user needs shift, and as research deepens. At Innovation Boost Zone (IBZ), we believe that the challenges imposed on us by the new transformative technologies calls for a new role for our Academic institutions when it comes to public good. I've been reflecting (beachside;) on the extraordinary #Innovate100 event from a couple months ago, as I believe we have just touched the tip of the iceberg regarding our region's potential for even greater growth. The event hosted 450+ local key leaders and highlighted many of our strengths...here are just a few that come to mind: Academic Leadership: We highlighted the importance of nurturing talent within our academic institutions. Collaboration between universities and industry is crucial in spurring innovation and developing a skilled and agile workforce capable of meeting the demands of our rapidly evolving economy. Research: Advancements in genomics, biotech, and healthtech are positioning New Jersey as a leader in cutting-edge scientific discoveries. These innovations contribute to our understanding of complex biological systems and pave the way for new treatments and technologies that can improve our lives. Technology and Digital Transformation: These are huge cornerstones of our state's legacy and the region’s future success. The integration of #AI, robotics, and other advanced technologies is revolutionizing the way we do business. Embracing these changes and investing in R&D and digital infrastructure will be key to maintaining our competitive edge in the global market. And thankfully, Gov. Murphy and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) have been making the bold investments to spur even more #innovation and #entrepreneurship in AI, tech, and life sciences. UW-Madison student entrepreneurs - I would highly recommend register to compete in the Transcend Competition. Here’s why: 1) All skill levels allowed- No matter which stage your company/idea is in, you can compete as long as you’re a UW student 2) It’s free money - Potential to win at least $10k in equity-free prize money (no strings attached) 3) It’s great practice - The process of reducing your idea into a pitch is a great exercise to gain clarity on your company’s path forward If you register, you can always decide to not compete, and it will ensure you do not miss any of the required steps to compete. So, in my opinion, it’s a no-brainer to register.

Maryland to lead the nation in research and innovation through new federally funded program Maryland houses more federal labs than any other state in the nation. These labs are more than just government facilities – they hold sophisticated technologies and world-renowned experts that support small business growth and innovation. Unfortunately, this asset has not been leveraged in a way that supports such growth and development. From a lack of knowledge about how to approach the researchers to simply being intimidated by the size of these labs, many small businesses that could benefit from collaborations with federal labs hesitate to do so. To remedy this gap, TEDCO recently announced a new program – the Federal Lab Leveraging Innovation to Products Pilot Program – that will promote new strategies for leveraging these unique assets.
