So happy to have collaborated on this article, which looks at what the EU Mission Ocean and Waters wants to achieve with citizen participation, the possible challenges, and how to solve them. You can read it here: https://lnkd.in/gi_RFvtf
Our PREP4BLUE article "Planning for citizen participation in the EU Mission to Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030" has just been published in Maritime Studies! Read it through this link: https://lnkd.in/gi_RFvtf We sought to study what the EU's "Mission Ocean & Waters" wants to achieve in relation to citizen participation, what the potential barriers might be, and how they might be overcome. We found that what Mission Ocean & Waters is trying to achieve is quite unique. It is superficially an environmental project, but the way it tries to achieve its aims – e.g. by establishing deliberative democratic initiatives, increasing social inclusion through its activities, and working with the European Investment Bank to unlock funding for marine restoration – make it potentially as much a political, social and economic transformation as an environmental. However, there are potential barriers to these transformations and they certainly can’t be taken for granted simply through the existence of the Mission Ocean & Waters framework. Our research suggests that between now and 2030, the Mission should focus on the following to ensure it achieves its citizen participation goals: (1) Increasing social inclusion and avoiding tokenism, (2) Increasing ocean literacy and Mission awareness, (3) Addressing disparities across the EU in formal ways for citizens to participate in policymaking, and (4) Strengthening aquatic citizen science. #MissionOcean #citizenparticipation

Very relevant indeed, many thanks #prep4blue David Whyte Quite some nice challenges in bringing #citizenparticipation #OceanLiteracy #social #inclusivity forward under #MissionOcean. Including: 🌊 Clarifying the type of #citizenparticipation (with whom, how and with which objective) relevant/necessary for different types of projects and initiatives (supporting projects, CSA - transversal and LightHouses, IA...) => do not ask everybody to do everything as this leads to counterproductive outcomes; 🌊 providing mechanisms to avoid fragmentation and duplication, ensuring effective #synergies and complementarities between #citizenparticipation activities organised at different levels of the #MissionOcean organisation (note: the same apply to #outreach #communication => see the number of #LinkedIn #websites of projects addressing similar topics with very limited audiences and impact...); 🌊 ensuring sound #citizenmobilisation #expertise, giving it space into project's governance, processes and activities; 🌊 setting synergies with parallel organisations and processes (e.g. #youth #networks, networks of stakeholders) to amplify outreach and impacts; 🌊 accompany changes in #mindset of #MissionOcean community so #StakeholderMobilisation #citizenengagement #inclusivity #social are never "tick the box" buzzwords (or nice panel discussions at key events) but effectively used and applied in their essence.... In relation to synergies, the #EU4ocean and its 1000+ members have a role to play as #OceanLiteracy #mobilisation #inclusivity #BlueCitizenship is central to our work and to the support we - Olga Mashkina Nathalie Van Isacker Anna Maria Marino Guillaume Lheureux Evy Copejans Ana Noronha Mikaela Martirosyan Sudhanshu Verma Molly Wingate Laura Bastide Lavinia Giulia Pomarico Lisa Picatto Willem De Moor Thorsten Kiefer Dina Eparkhina Tomasz Rusek Ruth Higgins Sara Granchinho Agueda Gras-Velazquez Ivana Kovac Josephine Hannay to name the ones most closely associated - provide to the coalition. We need to explore how best to strengthen synergies and collaboration between #MissionOcean key players and #EU4Ocean (some players being on both sides ☺️ ) so we can together contribute more effectively to strengthening #OceanLiteracy #Citizenmobilisation #Inclusivity #BlueCitizenship in the #EU.
