Indian #aircargo sector is about to witness a major overhaul, just as Air India Limited is planning to establish its seperate cargo arm, news reports have emerged that IAI - Israel Aerospace Industries is planning to set up a passenger to freighter (P2F) conversion line in India. The #OEM is in talks with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and a couple of other companies for this #JV. A few months back GMR Aero Technic inked a pact with Boeing to establish a P2F conversion line in India. All these news point toward one direction - India's #aircargo sector is about to soar and all major stakeholders want to be a part of this growth. India's air cargo market has remained bullish with total volume at Indian airports in Q1 of FY24-25 up by 14% Y-O-Y, while the international flow has been up by 20%. A part of this growth was due to disrupted ocean services resulting from the Red Sea crisis, particularly for shippers of urgent or time-sensitive cargo. All-in-all India's #aircargo trade has seen a significant traction in the last two years with pro-industry government initiatives like new #cargoterminals, including integrated, multimodal, dedicated facilities, expansion and modernisation of existing terminals, along with the strategic development of cargo transshipment hubs. #Boeing forecasts India's #aircargo growth to average 6.3% annually, fueled by manufacturing and #ecommerce. India's #aircargo growth story can be summed in just one sentence - India's air cargo industry aims reach to 10 million metric tonnes by 2030. ₹𝟯 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻: 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗵𝗼𝗮𝘅 𝗯𝗼𝗺𝗯 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 An Air India Boeing 777, loaded with approximately 130 tonnes of jet fuel, took off from Mumbai on October 14 for a 16-hour nonstop flight to New York's JFK airport. However, soon after takeoff, the airline received a bomb threat, forcing JFK-bound AI 119 to divert and prepare for landing in Delhi within two hours of departure. The event is not just a safety concern but also means a costly affair for an airline. The aircraft, which weighed between 340-350 tonnes with passengers, baggage, and cargo, faced a challenge as the maximum landing weight for a Boeing 777 is 250 tonnes. To land safely, the crew needed to jettison around 100 tonnes of fuel. “The fuel wastage cost alone works out to Rs 1 crore,” a senior pilot told TOI, explaining that at nearly Rs 1 lakh per tonne, the financial impact was significant. The overall costs escalate when additional expenses such as unexpected landing charges, hotel accommodations for over 200 passengers and crew, compensation for missed connections, grounding the aircraft for thorough checks, and arranging a fresh crew are factored in. Meanwhile, the airline also faced financial losses from the disruption of its return flight schedule. Rejoice! Air cargo sector as #aircargo #demand and #capacity are expected to rise in 2024 as compared to last year according to the latest predictions by IBA Group. As per its aviation intelligence platform, #IBA #Insight, #aircargo #demand will grow modestly by 5% to 258.1 billion cargo tonne kilometres. However, this will be outstripped by 8% growth in air cargo capacity to 600.3 billion air cargo tonne kilometres. This will see #cargoloadfactors continue to fall from a pandemic high of 56% in 2021 to a forecast 43% this year. In 2024, average #aircargoyields are expected to decline by approximately 18% year-over-year due to plentiful capacity but generally subdued #demand. This projection is an improvement from earlier #forecasts for the year, which had anticipated a 20% year-over-year decline in #yields. The active freighter fleet stood at 75% in June 2024, down from 85% before the pandemic in May 2019. Despite the increase in #aircargo #demand, freighter aircraft have not significantly benefitted due to growing passenger aircraft #bellyholdcapacity, leading to a greater number of #freighters being parked or stored. Narrowbody aircraft are the primary drivers of the cargo #market'sconversion activity. From January 2024 to mid-June 2024, there have been a total of 45 narrowbody conversions, compared to 126 conversions throughout the entirety of 2023. IBA forecast narrowbody #conversion levels to normalise in 2024, aligning closer to the 80 total conversions seen in 2021 and 89 in 2022.
