In a perfect world your resume tells your professional story. But in the real world nobody actually reads it for a story. They scan for stand-out items (familiar companies, schools, keywords, etc.). Reducing a candidate to a resume is shallow at best; insulting at worst. A cover letter isn't much better. Often I see candidates exausting themselves by broadening their job search. They have multiple versions of their resume for various opportunities, and countless hours invested in the process. They attempt to tell their story in a way that appeals to each particular opportunity, and confused on why they don't get reception from that careful customization. I like to inject warmth and context into the job-matching process, through carefully curated introductions directly to the executives leading the process. And I'd like to do away with the resume for good. Once and for all. So the candidates can tell their story for real.

Adapt Your Resume: I have found positive results when my resume is tweaked to fit each employer who will be receiving it. There are many experiences related to my previous employment and education history that are simply irrelevant to the hiring manager. Adapting your resume initially adds a little extra time to your preparation, but may save you a great deal of time in the long run when you quickly land your dream job. If you perform your due diligence and thoroughly research the company you desire to join, then take the time to review your resume point by point, asking how each one enhances my performance in the desired role. How does each point coincide with the company's culture. Some of those details should be expressed in the cover letter, but they must certainly be discussed during the interview. In my experience, if I don't have a specific reason to have it on my resume, I remove it. That principle has definitely helped me, and I trust it will help you.

What is more important than a COVER LETTER? *Answer*: Making sure that anything significant about YOU that you're trying to explain or convey in a cover letter is also addressed on your actual resume! Assume that your cover letter will be separated from your resume and address important things on the resume itself! Some examples: - You are about to self-relocate to the region where the job is, but your resume shows you're currently employed and living somewhere else. (Address this on your resume) - You are intentionally making a career pivot and can articulate your transferable skills. (Tell me this on your resume, don't hope I understand why you're applying for something that may seem like an odd pivot) - You've been laid off, which is why you were in your last position only 7 months (Put "laid off" near the dates of your employment). Let me know if you're struggling with how to explain on your resume something you'd assume would go in a cover letter. #coverletters

RESUME TIP: One thing that most people miss on their resume is a brief description of what your actual responsibilities are in your current and past roles. Even though you list your title, give a short description of EXACTLY what you're RESPONSIBLE for, not the DUTIES the job description for your job might say you do.
