This thesis describes the development, validation and implementation of the Assessment of Burden of Chronic Conditions (ABCC-)tool. The ABCC-tool measures and visualizes the burden people experience because of their chronic condition. As such, the ABCC-tool aims to facilitate a personalised approach to chronic care. Bringing innovations to daily practice is challenging but essential for the tool to benefit its users. These challenges lay in understanding the context, user experiences and implementation readiness. In other words, understanding how, where and by whom the tool is going to be used. This thesis highlighted that implementation plans are crucial for effective implementation. These plans should at least include skill-based training, and implementation guidance, and should always be directed at local needs. Both the ABCC-tool and the implementation studies in this thesis stress a personalized approach through assistance and guidance of those in need of help. Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Ir. Constant van Schayck and Prof. Dr. Ir. L. van Dijk Co-supervisors: Dr. Annerika Gidding-Slok, PhD and Dr. Bjorn Winkens #ImplementationOfChange #ABCCtool #ChronicConditions

🎉 We are very happy to announce that Peter Grunwald (CWI/Leiden University) has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant of 2.5 million euros by the European Research Council (ERC) for the project FLEX (Flexible Statistical Inference)! Grünwald will use the prestigious grant for the development of a new, more robust and flexible theory of statistics based on the novel concept of e-value. This will lead, for example, to more reliable methods for determining whether or not scientific results are statistically significant. In short: the e-value is the new p-value. 🔗 Read more in the news item on our website: https://lnkd.in/eRPshu9f #Statistics #Mathematics #ERCAdvanced

FEATURED MBoC ASSOCIATE EDITOR: Gregory Pazour, University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School How can MBoC benefit researchers in your area? “Communication of research through publication is critical to the scientific enterprise. Publication in MBoC gives your work wide visibility by being promoted to the entire ASCB community. The process is facilitated by peer editors that are experts in your field and will make fast and fair decisions about the suitability of the work for publication." https://lnkd.in/gKuGp-Bi

From the huge paper "Operational Research: Methods and Applications" "Despite the large body of literature, the role and impact of OR on improving care systems is less clear. Hospitals have “largely failed to use one of the most potent methods currently available for improving the performance of complex organisations” (Buhaug, 2002) and “staff may be largely unaware of the potential applications and benefits of OR” (Utley et al., 2022). " This is simply user resistance. I know a case in which doctors have refused to use/implement a model to schedule their shifts because the solutions put them working in some periods they didn't like. This give us an example of how hard is to apply rational methods to guide activities connected with higher social status (justice, medicine, politics) and how these same methods are recklessly used to move the "pawns" as simple objects.
