The 29th annual Conference of the Parties to the #UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). Here's a breakdown of its main points: 1. Labeling of #COP29: It has been called the "finance COP" due to its emphasis on increasing financial support for lower-income countries. This funding aims to help them reduce #greenhousegas emissions and adapt to the effects of #climatechange. 2. #UN-Backed Report: Emerging economies (excluding China) require #investments exceeding $2 trillion annually by 2030 to combat #globalwarming effectively. 3. Historical Financial Pledge: In 2009, wealthier nations committed to providing $100 billion per year to developing countries by 2020 for climate financing. This goal was achieved two years late, in 2022. Developing nations are now advocating for a new target of at least $1 trillion per year, known as the New Collective Quantified Goal (#NCQG), to replace the previous $100 billion pledge. 4. Energy Initiatives: The COP29 presidency introduced three initiatives under the #COP29 Action Agenda, building on #COP28 goals: Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge: Aims for a global deployment of 1,500 GW of energy storage by 2030, a sixfold increase from 2022. #Hydrogen Declaration: Promotes clean hydrogen technologies. #GreenEnergy Zones and Corridors Pledge: Focuses on developing #renewableenergy zones. 5. Global Carbon Market: A significant milestone at COP29 was the operationalization of the Global Carbon Market under #Article 6.4 of the #ParisAgreement. This mechanism is designed to unlock technology and funding to accelerate climate action, enabling substantial emissions reductions #globally. #ESG #ESGExcelerate #Sustainability #Transperancy DLS & Associates LLP Sumit Dhadda Harsha Ramnani

🌏 COP29 will have a much narrower agenda than COP28 last year. Here is what will be on top of it: 👇 - 🧧 #ClimateFinance: Success at #COP29 will be strictly connected to delivering the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG), a new financial target to support developing nations. Parties (aka countries) remain divided on many core elements around the NCQG, including the definition of what climate finance should cover and #lossanddamage funding. - 📰 #Article6 & #VoluntaryCarbonMarkets: Article 6 (of the Paris Climate Agreement) will be a major agenda item, and countries will negotiate the formalization of VCM parameters, after a UN expert group reached a deal on key elements of a global carbon trading system during #NYClimateWeek. - 📥 #NDCs: as per the Paris Agreement, parties must submit new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) every five years. These are national plans that outline how countries will reduce emissions and adapt to climate change. The third round of NDCs #NDCs3.0 are due in early 2025. COP29 will likely see the first of these new country submissions made. PS: if you're interested in understanding more about the #ParisAgreement 👀 me and Léa Weimann, LL.M have a whole podcast episode on it -- head over to People of COP Podcast! 🎙️ - 🔋 #EnergyTransition: the Presidency will build on the #GlobalMethanePledge lanuched at #COP28 by developing an Outcome Declaration with quantified targets to reduce methane in waste and food systems. #COP29 has also indentified #EnergyStorage as a key priority, which will include scaling up investment in energy grids (more on this to come -- watch this space!) PPS: I am not in Baku in person as I have a small baby, but I hope this gives motivation to the people who cannot attend to still get involved, share their knowledge and keep advocating for a safe and healthy future for everyone. #COP29 #ClimateDiplomacy #sustainability #commsforgood

A small note just ahead of COP29 ! #COP29, #UNFCCC #ClimateAction #positiveimpact #CarbonMarket "Skeptical about ~ Summits, Conferences and Forums; they rarely lead to real and timebound change, regardless of formats !!" - Well this is not a statement, but a threaded opinion I found in the context of COP29; rather I would say it's a perspective shaped by countless observations, experiences, frustrations, hopes, and expectations from stakeholders worldwide regarding large platforms like COP. It’s a hard truth—disheartening yet undeniably real. I have been (happily & proudly) into Climate Change domain over 16 years now. I’ve seen the evolution of this field up close. While COP being a pivotal annual event for all of us, its essence has always been crucial for amplifying voices, respecting opinions, fostering open dialogues, showcasing transformative innovations, and building commitments. Yet, they also carry a greater duty—driving "real actions on time" beyond rhetoric. Addressing climate change demands collective, coordinated efforts from every sector; each action, no matter how small, contributes to the larger impact. As we know, the carbon market plays a crucial role here, driving measurable outcomes while enforcing accountability and responsibility toward set targets. Over the past five years, COP forums could have achieved significant progress through incremental actions rather than delaying for consensus on complex issues (such as Article 6 of the Paris Agreement). While significant time has been lost, but I still believe that our path forward remains intact, and accelerating the journey is within reach. Therefore, I certainly echo the call for tangible outcomes over lofty pledges, and YES I’m also holding onto hope for meaningful progress from the leaders and changemakers gathering at COP29. We (referring to all my fellow industry colleagues and dedicated professional like me) are already on the ground, equipped with the experience, projects, and strategies needed to drive tangible, measurable change. There are numerous plans from originators, changemakers, youths which are not just concepts; they’re actionable frameworks poised to create impactful shifts across the climate sector. Now, all we need are the Green Lights. So, let’s urge decision makers to commit to actionable strategies in Baku, not just words and distant promises !! SO, LOOKING FORWARD TO OUTCOME ENABLING REAL ACTIONS — not another tapestry of colorful pledges or vague roadmaps for the future. Thoughts?

Today I heard so many people talking about Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. While I’ve followed sustainability news and innovations, I realized I didn’t fully understand what Article 6 cause or why it’s such a big deal. After some digging, I found two great articles that explain what Article 6 is, how it works, and why it’s a hot topic at COP. I thought it would be helpful to share them with you all, so now you know too! 😊 Check the comments for the links – and let’s keep learning together! 🌱 And that’s one of the privileges and advantages of working at events like COP29 – I love expanding my knowledge and discovering something new for myself. And it’s especially valuable when it’s something as important as Article 6, which plays a critical role in shaping our future. Well, and I’m still trying to wrap my head around some of the principles and information here, but it’s a very interesting reading. #COP29 #Sustainability #ClimateAction

🌍 Historic Breakthrough at COP29: Article 6 of the Paris Agreement Gets the Green Light! 🎉🌱 After nearly a decade of negotiations, COP29 has officially approved Article 6 - a game-changer for global climate action! This marks a major milestone that brings transparency, accountability, and scalability to international carbon trading. 🤔❓Why is this so important? 🔹 Article 6 sets the rules for how countries and businesses can collaborate on emissions reductions through carbon markets. It ensures transparency and accountability, preventing double counting or greenwashing. 🌐 There are two key mechanisms under Article 6: 1️⃣ A6.2: This allows countries to trade carbon credits with each other, helping them meet their climate targets more cost-effectively while ensuring no double counting. 2️⃣ A6.4: Known as the Sustainable Development Mechanism, this is a centralized system for carbon credits overseen by the UN, ensuring that credits come from real, additional emission reductions. 📋🌟Key Benefits of Article 6: ✅ More Trust: Transparent carbon credit systems ensure better quality and reduce greenwashing. 🚀 Faster Action: Countries and companies can work together to achieve net-zero goals more quickly and affordably. 💰 More Investment: Carbon credits can unlock funding to support impactful climate solutions and projects. 🛡️ Stronger Integrity: No more double counting - clear rules to track and verify emission reductions. This breakthrough at COP29 Baku is a significant step towards a sustainable future, fostering global collaboration and unlocking the potential of carbon markets to combat climate change. 🌍💚 #COP29 #Baku #Article6 #A6 #CarbonMarkets #ClimateAction #Sustainability #NetZero #CarbonCredits #GreenFuture 🌱💡
