Today I deleted the post I scheduled to send. A Monday morning generic ‘ well-being tips for week’ post is what nobody needs in the UK right now. The racist riots that began last week are sickening and horrific. If the intention of these people is to “reclaim Britain” then I do not stand for Britain because I do not stand for violence and discrimination. What I see here is a lot of already existing Islamophobia and hatred for immigrants triggered by assumptions and misinformation about the murders of three girls by a person that was a) not Muslim and b) was born in the UK. What I do stand for is my wonderfully diverse and people- centered city. A city where I get to witness kindness every day. A city where I have the privilege to broaden my knowledge about different ways of being and living. A city where I get to hear many perspectives. A city where I have learned to notice my biases and work with them to become more compassionate. A city where our diversity has always been considered a strength and something to celebrate. Encouraging Birmingham to unite if these people come our way. Also, thinking that my research into social connectedness is now needed more than ever!
