Advocates for Community Health (ACH) just concluded their 3rd annual member meeting. Anyone at CW OHT interested in “lessons learned” from engaging patients in designing local integrated healthcare services delivery system? The highest impact on redesigning the “patient experience” is a methodology called PATIENT EXPERIENCE CO-DESIGN across the silos along the continuum of care across the system. This methodology normally results in the redesign of the fragmented core SYSTEMS, STRUCTURES, and WORK PROCESSES and produces a surge in Patient Satisfaction rates, followed closely by a surge in staff satisfaction rates. Redesigns shift local healthcare services delivery systems from being “PROVIDER-CENTRIC SYSTEMS” — to become “PATIENT-CENTRIC SYSTEMS”. On the other hand most structures that brought Patients, Families and Caregivers on “PATIENT ADVISORY COUNCILS” produces very little impact on patient or staff experience. Most “ADVISORY” Councils could not provide data demonstrating measurable improvements in services and were considered to be primary PR exercises. Patient members of these Councils who departed before their terms expired, said in exit interviews that they felt they did not believe these Councils were a serious attempt to tap into the group’s collective intelligence to make serious changes in their suboptimal patient experiences.🤷♂️🤔
