The biggest loser in this war of attrition, invariably, is the patient. Lack of choice, higher out-of-pocket costs, delayed care - the list goes on and on. More than 50% of a typical hospital/practice's revenue is not keeping up with the inflationary pressures. That leaves the commercial payors to bear the brunt. As a result, the impact on health insurance premiums is going to be even worse in the upcoming renewals. #physicians #hospitals #businessofhealthcare Oncospark Authparency, Inc Jordan Johnson, MSHA, iMPaCT Sapan Bafna Nasser Ashour

🏥 New RAND Research Alert: The Curious Case of Hospital Indemnity Insurance for Medicare Beneficiaries 🧐 Our team just published a Health Affairs Forefront article exploring an understudied aspect of Medicare coverage: Hospital Indemnity Insurance (HII). Key points: 🗝️ HII provides cash payouts after hospital stays or certain health services 🗝️ Little is known about HII in the Medicare context We propose a research agenda to address critical questions: ❓ What coverage do HII policies provide? ❓ Are beneficiaries aware of HII? ❓ Who has HII coverage? ❓ Is HII good or bad for beneficiaries? As Medicare Advantage enrollment grows and policy changes loom, understanding HII becomes increasingly important. 📰 Read our full article to learn more about HII and its potential impact on Medicare beneficiaries: https://lnkd.in/et3GpmZy Dmitry Khodyakov, Erin Taylor, Michael Dworsky, Christine Buttorff, Melony Sorbero #HealthPolicy #Medicare #Insurance

As always, my fellow IBD patient advocate, Natalie Hayden, expertly examines a healthcare and patient experience issue that we all need to be talking about -- the time-intensive, frustrating task of constantly having to go "head-to-head" with insurance companies patients are saddled with. (Story of my life! I'm dealing with an absurd and annoying-as-heck insurance situation now...) 😣 Check out her recent blog, "Healthcare Here: A Campaign to Take the Burden Off Patients and Hospital" on her Lights, Camera, Crohn's website to learn more about this issue and Healthcare Here's mission to address it. 😷 🏥 Here's a snippet: "Going head-to-head with insurance companies goes hand in hand with managing chronic illness. The amount of time wasted, and energy exhausted over the course of a patient’s journey is incomprehensible. But the Alliance for Access to Care is looking to change that with the help of its latest campaign known as Healthcare Here. This coalition of healthcare associations has shared concerns about the way that insurance companies have adopted and implemented practices and policies that impede timely decisions related to treatment coverage at the expense of patient care. The burden of these practices, as we know all too well, not only falls on patients, but also on local hospitals that make up the backbone of community care that so many people rely on." #patientadvocacy #healthcare #healthadvocacy #healthcarehere #allianceforaccesstocare #catholichealthassociation

And I have heard that insurance companies don't run healthcare.....This is just insane to me that this issue is so big and complex when really it is all about doing what is right and taking care of people. Too often people aren't even aware of how insurance works until they are at the mercy of using it. #Transformation #Collaboration #PatientsFirst

#Medicare #beneficiaries have gaps in coverage. Is #hospital indemnity #insurance a good way to cover these gaps? Some insurance agents think so, but we really do not know what value this non-comprehensive coverage brings to Medicare and #MedicareAdvantage enrollees. Our latest Health Affairs Forefront piece calls for a better understanding of hospital indemnity insurance in the context of Medicare and Medicare Advantage and suggests a four-part research agenda. A big thanks to my RAND colleagues Erin Taylor, Michael Dworsky, Christine Buttorff, Rachel Reid, MD, MS, and Melony Sorbero for putting an initial research agenda together!

"Profits for insurance companies were consistently lower than those for nonprofit and for-profit hospitals. Profit margins were particularly low for insurers between 2014 and 2016 after the insurance provisions of the Affordable Care Act took effect in 2014. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) imposed medical loss ratio requirements on insurers, requiring insurers to issue rebates to customers if their medical spending did not exceed 80% of premiums.16 This Medical Loss Ratio (MLR) requirement limited profit margins for insurers, while no such limit was placed on hospitals."
