As New York’s cannabis market takes shape, there’s a huge opportunity to learn from established markets like California. West Coast operators have battled challenges for years, from narrow margins to fluctuating consumer demands, and one big takeaway is clear: efficiency must come first. If you’re entering this space in New York with plans for hand-trimmed, labor-intensive products, you might be setting yourself up for a tough road. Many consumers say they want hand-trimmed flower, but aren’t willing to pay a premium for it. This misalignment between cost and willingness to pay has sunk plenty of promising brands. Out west, some of the best operators are moving toward strain selections that thrive with machine trimming and leaning on efficient tools to cut down labor costs. Purists may resist, but investing in a machine trimmer can make the difference between surviving and folding. Here in New York, we’re up against many of the same pressures that drive consolidation on the West Coast: high taxes, regulatory costs, and a market that’s flooded with options. New York can become a leading cannabis market if we start smart. Let’s protect our margins and set ourselves up for sustainability by prioritizing efficiency from day one.
