Decarbonizing the Built Environment: Key Insights from our Climate Group NYC Climate Week Event Today, we had the opportunity to host a powerful discussion on how we can work to decarbonize the built environment—an urgent and complex challenge facing the construction industry. Our Co-founder and CEO, Ben Christensen kicked us off with a key question to group: “If you had $100 million to decarbonize the built environment, how would you allocate it?” The conversation, featuring insights from Julia Gisewite, LEED AP, WELL AP, Chief Sustainability Officer at Turner Construction Company and Jack Rusk, Cofounder at C.Scale. Here are our 5 key takeaways on the problem and the huge opportunity ahead of us: 1️⃣ Early decision-making is essential—The importance of making sustainable choices early in the build project lifecycle cannot be overstated. Missed opportunities can be hard to recover later. 2️⃣ Data-driven supply chains—With $1.3 trillion spent annually on construction materials, the potential for emissions reductions through smarter, data-driven decisions is enormous. 3️⃣ Cost and timeline parity—Sustainable materials need to match traditional options in both cost and timing for widespread adoption. 4️⃣ The power of policy—Compliance is a powerful driver of change. Real-time data on materials can streamline compliance and prevent costly mistakes. 5️⃣ Circular economy opportunities—By using waste materials in construction, we not only reduce waste but also create a new economy that benefits both people and the planet. At Cambium, we commit every day to bringing innovative solutions like Carbon Smart Wood™ and simplified supply chains to life to drive the change needed in our industry. Thanks to everyone who showed up today. The solutions happen when we connect the dots across industry and today was an exciting moment for that. Read more on the discussion over at https://lnkd.in/e8Vsfi38 And a huge thank you to J.M. Kaplan Fund for always being the most gracious hosts. #Decarbonization #Sustainability #CarbonSmart #ConstructionInnovation #ClimateAction

The focus on net zero has increased dramatically over the years. As the regulatory requirements for climate transition disclosure continue to evolve, it becomes crucial for real estate players to take stock of their emissions profile, implement decarbonization steps and consider how to measure and report on progress. Doing so sooner rather than later can help businesses stay ahead of the curve in a market. Last month, #EY collaborated with Arup to co-host a seminar on "Decarbonizing the Real Estate Value Chain: Seizing Opportunities for Climate Transition" at our office in Hong Kong. Many thanks to Dr Vincent Cheng from Arup, Clarence Leung from Construction Industry Council, Bin Wu from GRESB, and Ee Sin Tan for sharing regulatory updates, market practices, and tools for decarbonization and managing Scope 3 emissions. Sustainability experts Calvin Lee Kwan, DEnv, JD, Eddie Tse, Julie Wong, Mark Lam and Tracy Wong Harris also exchanged ideas and shared practical insights in a panel discussion. Real estate decisions made today will have a lifetime of impacts. If the building sector is going to effectively lower emissions to net zero by 2050 — stakeholders must start moving in this direction today. Check out this article written by my colleagues Annie Smith, PE, CEM, LEED, BEMP and Tom Abram, PE, LEED AP, CEM. It showcases our clever tool Carbon Signal, which uses machine learning and physics-based models to help decarbonise single assets or whole portfolios.
#Decarbonization is a complex problem. For those responsible for several buildings, such as offices, schools, universities, banks, retail, residential, healthcare, or storage facilities, the carbon emissions of these buildings are an immediate issue. Addressing these carbon emissions is increasingly shifting from an aspiration to a necessity in business planning. Growing regulatory pressures in different states, countries, and regions around the world will compel companies to act. To tackle this complex problem, we specialize in portfolio decarbonization, the strategic assessment and planning for a collection of properties to reduce carbon emissions at scale, align with capital planning and financial goals, and improve the comfort and well-being of occupants. Every company that takes steps to decarbonize its portfolio is doing its part to protect the planet for future generations and reduce the harmful impacts of global warming. There is no time like the present to take action. Last month at #ClimateWeekNYC I was lucky enough to be asked to join this Building Magazine, Gleeds and Climate Group organised roundtable on decarbonising #buildings. We had a really good discussion - the details of which you can read about in the piece below. One key take-away for me from this and similar discussions in NYC: Regulatory pressure in the shape of an ambitious framework is an essential backdrop to driving up demand and thus funding. All corners of the private sector are keen to do (even) more, but we need to know that we're betting on the (firm) future, not let's-see-what-happens-it-might-all-change-tomorrow. #construction #renovation
As part of last month’s Climate Week NYC, we hosted a roundtable with the support of Gleeds and in partnership with the Climate Group. Our discussion with leading construction experts identified the blockers to greener buildings and key drivers for change. Our very own Anica Landreneau, HOK Global Sustainable Design Director, recently took part in a roundtable during Climate Week NYC, hosted by Building in collaboration with the Climate Group and Gleeds. Industry experts gathered to discuss the pivotal role of investors and regulations in advancing decarbonization within the built environment. From the conversation, it’s clear that while there is a strong commitment to creating low-carbon solutions, project teams often face barriers due to regulatory complexities and the varying levels of pressure from investors. Anica highlighted how essential it is to measure total carbon impact—not just operational, but also embodied carbon—which significantly influences project decisions, particularly when it comes to retrofitting and material selection. For those of us working in sustainable design, these discussions are critical. They remind us that while the road to net-zero can be challenging, the combined push from regulatory frameworks and investor expectations can catalyze impactful change. https://lnkd.in/gM_2SU6S

DECARBONIZATION - Word of the week! 🌍 🏢 Decarbonization, simply put, is the process of reducing carbon emissions to combat climate change. In essence, it involves transitioning away from fossil fuel-based energy sources and adopting cleaner, more sustainable alternatives. The building sector plays a significant role in carbon emissions, contributing nearly 40% of global energy-related CO2 emissions. This staggering figure underscores the critical importance of decarbonizing the built environment. As we strive to address climate change, it's imperative that we prioritize sustainable solutions within the construction industry. Excited to see initiatives like "Peeb Cool" (launched last week by Programme for Energy Efficiency in Buildings (PEEB) at the Buildings and Climate Global Forum, in Paris,) gaining traction, aiming to boost energy-efficient and climate-resilient buildings across 11 countries. This aligns perfectly with our broader goal of reducing carbon emissions and advancing sustainability in the built environment. Let's continue pushing for innovative solutions and collaborative efforts to decarbonize the building sector. Together, we can build a greener, more sustainable future for all. #Decarbonization #Sustainability #GreenBuilding #ClimateAction
