If you are over 30, your chance of getting a/another job in tech is pretty slim. “New data from the EEOC shows that the tech workforce is a little younger than the average workforce — and getting younger still.“ “According to an analysis of 10 million tech workers, those under 25 hold 41% of roles in the field but represent just 33% of the workforce. That share grew 20 times faster than their presence across industries from 2014 to 2022. Meanwhile, the proportion of elder millennials working in tech is shrinking.” What to do as a job seeker? 1️⃣ Want to make it through first screening? Remove graduation dates, degrees that no longer are offered, and any job experience older than 10 or 15 years. Before you scream at me for caving to discrimination, I’m not saying discrimination is ok in any shape or form. I want to remain realistic and help people get through the first door, get that job, and then they can use their power to make systematic changes. 2️⃣ Start networking IN PERSON in your target cities so you can meet potential hiring managers BEFORE jobs are posted. You can do this on LinkedIn but it’s very difficult to get noticed and be remembered. (As someone who hosts occasional networking events, I can confirm I’ve met several job seekers who invest time and money to FLY IN from other cities to meet decision makers.) 3️⃣ Get real and candid feedback on your profile and interview prep so you can improve. You need to be ready for recruiter screen, technical and panel rounds, at very minimum. If your LI profile has only been updated when you got a new job, it’s time for a revamp. 👋🏼Also, maybe expand to non-tech industry jobs in your search, including manufacturing/CPG, if you have highly transferable skills like data analytics. You might be pleasantly surprised. 🤗And it’s not too late to build your personal brand so you can have other income sources. BONUS, as promised: If you are worried about getting laid off, watch out for subtle signs you might be getting “pushed out”: - You get a new manager or “layered” suddenly due to re-org - Decisions that impact you and your team come as a surprise rather than with your input - You no longer feel heard and your opinions don’t seem to matter (but they used to) - Expensive consultants have been brought in to provide input on something that’s your expertise - You haven’t been promoted in a while… Join Data With Serena™️’s candid convos on the weekends and comment with your questions below! #genZ #LITrendingTopics

If you've been having difficulty landing a job in tech, it's not you. It really is the current job market, which is absolutely insane right now. Whether you're a newbie or someone who has been in the trenches for several years, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind right now: 1. Your job search (unless you had the foresight and good fortune to focus on AI and Machine Learning) will take longer than it normally would have before the market changed in late 2022 due to course-correction from the years prior (overhiring that happened during the pandemic, zero interest rates ending in 2021) because you're competing with 1000's of other job searchers (around 263,000 people in tech were laid off in 2023, and YTD, there have been 60,000 laid off in 2024). 2. There's typically a summer slump in hiring from June through August, but in addition to that, a new report by workforce solutions firm Manpower indicates that employers will slow hiring over the next quarter. Companies are doing a wait-and-see as they keep their eye on what interest rates are going to do and on how AI is going to affect their talent acquisition and retention strategy over the next few years. 3. If you require remote work, need relocation or compensation that matches what you were earning (especially if you worked at a FAANG), or don't have sufficient work experience, expect a lot of competition and an even longer job search process. All that said, be pragmatic AND get out of your comfort zone. Recruiters and hiring managers are inundated with applications (many of them from people who are applying to anything and everything because panic and desperation has set in), so it's even more important now, more than ever, to lean into strategic networking. You need to stand out, and you will definitely NOT stand out by being just another application in the pile. Do not be shy about putting yourself out there, reconnecting with those you know and authentically connecting with those who you don't know but are relevant to your job search. (Whatever you do, please don't pitchslap people you don't know with a variation of "Hi! You don't know me but I need a job and I'd love for you to refer me!" though.) All that said, things will get better. For those of us who remember the dot-com bubble bursting in the early 2000's and the economic repercussions of the real estate recession in 2010, even though things felt extremely dire, at the end of the day, we're still standing. Some of us had to shift- either temporarily or permanently- into different roles, different industries. We've had to take a step back and do what needed to be done in order to keep our heads above water until the flood waters receded. You will survive this, you will thrive and be able to look back at this era years from now and be proud of the stronger, wiser, battle-tested, more resilient person you've become after making it to the end of this gauntlet that we're currently facing. #jobsearch

I'm reading your applications, but are you reading the job descriptions? 🤔 We post roles with "Senior" and "Enterprise" for highly technical, developer-centric products. Yet, we receive applications from folks who've only worked in real estate or restaurant customer service (outside of Software or Tech at all, not real estate and HoReCa for tech products). Transferrable skills are valuable, but let's be real. 🤷♂️ How do you leap from one field to another and expect to land a senior-level role? The client pool and product type are different, and there's a steep learning curve and risk gap. I anticipate comments about lacking empathy for those laid off and seeking jobs. This is not true. I strive to provide feedback and be approachable, but delivering hard truths is also necessary: 1️⃣ The job market is challenging right now, and what might have gotten you a job in a different industry or with a great title a couple of years back, won't be happening today. There are so many lays-off going on that a lot of companies hiring don't need to discuss bringing in people with "transferable skills" because they have people who have done the job in the same industry and same role that might be open for a new opportunity. Luckily, there's light at the end of this tunnel and reports indicate that it will improve by 2025 (can't wait to have engineers telling me how awful recruiter I am because I try to pitch a role with a different programming language to them) 2️⃣ LinkedIn Easy Apply has made it easy to apply—and get rejected. It's crucial to ask yourself, "How many of these roles am I genuinely a top candidate for?" One year ago, I left AutoScout24 thinking I would easily land another Talent Acquisition job. After several rejections, I realized I wasn't as special as I thought. I ended up pivoting to a new industry (agency recruitment) at a lower level than expected. This isn't an "I've done it, so you should too" post but a reflection on facing a retracting market. Being adaptable is painful and a lot of influencers prefer to post "you can do it" and "feel gooders" rather than bring the hard questions that need to be asked to tough market conditions. ❗ This post isn't to philosophize about the market but to honestly discuss how to navigate it - ofc I would want to have enough time to get personalized feedback to all my over 500+applicants per role but that's just not feasible.

I recently discovered Silke from a post she identified A FAKE LinkedIn™ Profile spamming comments under 100s of posts "offering you a job". She identified the profile picture used from another real person via a foundation. It's important that candidates are aware of these scammers, as you have to self-scrutinize this activity due to a lack of being and to rely on the platform to protect users. Tech job market is competitive. It used to be easy to stand out with strong tech skills, but now even beginners often have the same skills as seniors. Struggling to land interviews? Try a different job search strategy: 👇 Cold Applying: Quick but competitive—hard to stand out. 🫤 Cold Applying + Networking: Apply, then reach out to the hiring manager—shows initiative and increases visibility. 😃 Networking with Recent Hires: Seek advice and introductions—personal referrals are gold. 🤗 Engaging with LinkedIn Posts: Respond to job posts—this often leads to quicker, more personalized responses. 👍 Targeting Funded Startups: Reach out proactively—startups are hiring before they even post jobs. 🤫 Build a portfolio: Stand out with compelling projects, especially if you don't have an often required 2 year experience. 👉 Best Approach? Combine strategies. Apply, network, engage, build experience, and explore startups. Stay curious, stay proactive, and keep going! Follow for more job search tips 🤗🚀 #dataanalytics #jobsearch #gettinginterviews #dataanalyst #resume
