Complex issues rarely have simple answers! Student a) bounces around to different schools, never settles, never builds relationships and develops learned helplessness in their education and we expect them to magically fit in to the “right” schooling/vocational environment. Student b) is moved on to another school after causing significant harm to the community whether that’s over a short term or long term. Respite for the community and family can occur and a new start for the student can occur without prejudice or bias. I’ve spoken to “student b’s” who have said being “moved on” to another school was the best thing that happened to them because they had a fresh start and it helped them to make changes. I’ve also encountered “student a’s” who require high levels of support just to feel like a school is a safe place for them. More often than not it’s the restorative educational process leading up to the expulsion and the support provided to the student and family throughout this time that makes a difference. How we support a student in transitioning to another school will always determines this level of success. In short, these decisions are rarely black and white and we won’t always nail it perfectly! Doing what’s best for a community of staff and other students while supporting an individual to be happy, healthy and educated is never a clear cut process and decision. But doing it with clarity, honesty and communication always supports a family to understand “where to next”.

California's college enrollment rates are telling: 62% of high schoolers enroll within a year of graduating, yet disparities persist. A recent report shared that only 53% of low-income students and only 41% of English learners enroll in college within a year of high school. It's crucial we address these gaps to ensure equitable access to higher education. 🎓📚 Clover works with administrators to evaluate potential community partners, needs of the local and regional labor markets as well as the unique attributes of their specific learner segment to determine the best model for them – support implementation, and generate adoption and advocacy. A functioning academic accountability system is crucial for both the causes of school choice and parental rights in education. The following post explains some of the shortfalls of the current iteration of A-F Accountability, how Texas continually works to improve the system, and the roadblocks faced by those who seek true transparency in academic accountability. Simply put, while some try to provide parents with honest data, others attempt to obfuscate the truth surrounding public school performance. #accountability #education #learning #edchat #students #studentsuccess #parentalrights #schoolchoice #txed #txlege

Educational redlining still exists according to a new study by Available to All. Axios Russell Contreras wrote “School segregation between Black and white students has returned to 1968 levels.” There is still legal discrimination embedded in state laws. “School officials exploit loopholes to cherry-pick students and even criminally prosecute low-income families that try to send their children to elite public schools outside of their assigned boundaries.” Why does it feel as if we’re going backwards? Having access to quality education should not be based on socio-economic status. All students should have a right to quality education no matter where they live. #educationequalityforall

Many low-income and first-generation high school students have concerns about preparedness, the ability to meet their basic needs, and academic costs are impacting their future education goals. Most students would like their school to provide more guidance on finances, and mental & physical health, and help identify postsecondary education options. Because of this, we must advocate for policies that support educational equity and opportunity for all. We can band together to ensure every child has the chance to thrive academically and reach their full potential. #EducationMatters

Why are government schools not the first choice? The choice to attend a government school versus a private or charter school is a significant decision for many parents. Although government schools are generally viewed as dependable, they often fall short as the first choice for several reasons. One key factor is the perceived lack of resources, such as outdated curricula and inadequate facilities. Parents may also be concerned about overcrowded classrooms, low teacher-student ratios, and a limited range of extracurricular activities. Additionally, the stigma associated with government schools, especially in certain socioeconomic contexts, can significantly impact parents' decisions. #silverlinefoundation
