Injection moulding tooling has a limited lifespan. After many production cycles, wear occurs which can impact the quality of the moulded components. A common issue from worn tooling is flash defects. Injection moulding is the process of injecting molten plastic into a precision-engineered mould in order to create plastic products and components that are used in countless applications. In brief, the injection moulding process can be broken down into five phases: 1. Clamping – the two-piece mould is closed and clamped 2. Injection – molten plastic, melted down from granules, is injected into the mould 3. Dwelling – the liquid mass is held under pressure at a specific temperature for a certain period 4. Cooling – pressure is released and the part is allowed to cool and set 5.
