In honour of Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, CAAT hosted Indigenous physician and advocate Dr. Alika Lafontaine earlier today for a virtual session with CAATsters. Dr. Alika shared a brief history of reconciliation in Canada, emphasizing how to implement and promote equity, redesign health systems for improved efficiency and inclusivity, and advocate effectively for systemic change. Dr. Lafontaine’s presentation and the Q&A that followed gave us an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the significance of this day, and the lasting impact of the cultures, voices, experiences, and histories of Canada’s First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. Thank you, Dr. Alika Lafontaine, for honouring these communities and sharing your story with us. #NDTR #TruthandReconciliation #Canada #LifeatCAAT #EquityMatters #Diversity #Belonging

🚨Canadian Sovereignty at Risk:The Truth About BillC-293🚨 Bill C-293, passed under the guise of "pandemic prevention and preparedness," is not what it seems. Here's how it's designed to undermine Canada's sovereignty: 1️⃣- International Collaboration and Standards (Section 3(2)(o)): This part mandates cooperation with international organizations like the WHO and FAO, forcing the Canadian government to adopt policies based on global standards. 2️⃣ - One Health Approach (Section 3(3)(a)): A multisectoral approach includes global health metrics, aligning Canada with international standards and practices beyond national control. 3️⃣ - Foreign Affairs and Global Health Equity (Section 3(2)(n)): This provision commits Canada to support health equity worldwide, which could shape domestic policy to align with international public health priorities. ‼️Why This Matters‼️ 🚩Loss of Autonomy: These sections could lead to Canada following health directives that might not suit our unique challenges, demographics, or even our values. 🚩Economic Implications: Aligning with international standards might favor multinational interests over local businesses, affecting our economy and food security. 🚩Democratic Deficit: Decisions on health could increasingly be made in international forums rather than by elected Canadian representatives. 🚨Call to Action🚨 ➡️Educate yourselves on Bill C-293. Understand its implications beyond the surface. ➡️Contact your MPs. Demand clarity on how our sovereignty will be protected against these global overreaches. ➡️Engage in public discourse. This bill isn't just about health; it's about who controls Canada's future. Today marks a significant milestone as CARE, in collaboration with local civil society organisations, Mane Ho Vizaun Foun (Men With New Vision) and Movimento Feto Foin Sa’e (MOFFE), sign a five-month partnership agreement with funding from the Australia Non-Governmental Cooperation Program (ANCP). 🥳 This pioneering program marks a paradigm shift in CARE's approach, embracing equitable partnership as the cornerstone of its engagement with local civil society organisations. Adopting the principles of equitable partnership empowers national and local actors to spearhead development initiatives, leveraging their inherent strengths, leadership, and contextual insights to tackle local development challenges effectively and achieve tangible outcomes. Under this program, Mane ho Vizaun Foun and MOFFE will bolster women’s economic justice and will have the opportunity to allocate funds to strengthen their institutional capacities in identified areas. I have so many questions with our South Africa NHI bill being enacted, or signed as an Act today. Where can I see the roadmap, capability, roll out, funding, etc.! Can one refer me to some few articles or open a space to clarify how society can contribute to make this a success. Societally, this is the right thing to do, however do we have the right governance structures, and implementers to ensure the success of an initiative that bridges the inequality gap. Don’t come for me! I have questions ✌️#Goal 3: Good health and well being. We have a young population but we have a productivity issue, in my head part of it is poor health services available to our people.

In this new Whole-COMM policy brief, authors Basak Yavcan, Carmine Conte, PhD and Nahikari Irastorza, explore the linkages between inclusive integration policies at the local level and public attitudes towards migration and social cohesion. MIPEX-L data shows that in towns with better integration policies, there is also a more positive perception of migrants and their integration. Residents of these localities are also more in favour of policies that welcome and support newcomers from non-EU countries. Failure to adopt inclusive policies risks polarisation, exclusion, and segregation of both communities. 🌍 Healthy Borders, Healthy Nations: Responsive Cross-Border Health Initiatives 🌍 Tomorrow, we will facilitate Track C's breakaway session as part of the 7th East African Community (EAC) Secretary General's Forum. This session, themed "Healthy Borders, Healthy Nations: Responsive Cross-Border Health Initiatives," will tackle a critical question: 💡 How can the EAC ensure that cross-border health initiatives not only improve pandemic preparedness but also foster social cohesion and trust among border communities that have historically been divided or in conflict? The session underscores the importance of collaboration in addressing both health challenges and the broader goal of regional integration. By investing in responsive health initiatives, we can build stronger, more resilient communities while fostering trust and cooperation across borders. The Secretary General's Forum, under this year’s overarching theme "Towards a Resilient and Fully Integrated East Africa: Harnessing Opportunities in the Borderless Community," continues to serve as a vital platform for shaping the future of our region. It enables meaningful stakeholder dialogue, highlights success stories of integration, and identifies solutions to shared challenges. We look forward to this engaging session that will contribute to the important discussions shaping the future of a unified and prosperous East Africa.
