“What’s the big hype about taylor swift.. she’s not even that good”.. said a dear male friend of mine who clearly does not like her…and I told him “Your anecdotal experience does not trump statistically significant data” and given that he is a wise guy he took my point gracefully. I read somewhere that ‘Opinion is really the lowest form of human knowledge. It requires no accountability, no understanding. The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound purpose larger than the self kind of understanding. ~Bill Bullard’ I have doled out my share of opinions in my life time and I am humbled after reading this.. Artist like Taylor swift and others ( as cited in the article) now have the power to change people’s lives (and I mean economically) beyond thier songs and that’s a contribution worth recognition and celebration .. not criticism …and yet they get trolled in ways their male counterparts never face. Fortunately we live in an age where access to information is easily available … even in a polarised opinionated world.. if you search “ good things about xxx” search ‘bad things about xxx” too so you can make up your own mind… and not get influenced by the algorithm …and then there is data like the below article to support your inference. Here’s to celebrating the wins of these mighty talented women breaking barriers, inspiring young girls and transforming lives through thier songs and music.

As Grammy-winning Billie Eilish drops her third album Hit Me Hard and Soft, and it’s worth calling out that women are driving the music industry at unprecedented rates. We all know about the global success of Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, but here’s the even bigger picture: ➡️ In 2023, women performers generated 73% of overall sales for the top 10 global touring artists. ➡️ The gains for artists were mirrored behind the scenes: for the first time in 12 years, the percentage of women songwriters increased—from 14.1% in 2022 to 19.5% in 2023. ➡️ This change was due almost exclusively to the number of women of color credited as songwriters in 2023. Jonathan Karp's research focuses on the complex relationship between #Jews and the communities that surround them, particularly in the #musicbusiness. Jews have long been at the heart of America's music industry, working as business people, composers, and top-notch performers in genres connected to #African American #culture. They were also prominent as interpreters of Black music, musicians themselves, and entrepreneurs of #Blackmusic. Karp is currently working on a new book that explores Black and Jewish relations through the lens of popular music and the music #business. Jews are a minority and diasporic people, and their history has been shaped by their interactions with other surrounding groups. The modern United States is a far different #environment, comprised of immigrants and multiple minorities, mainly Christian but from all around the globe. These groups are engaged in similar struggles for survival and toleration, looking for #economic niches to fill while competing and occasionally building alliances with one another. The #development of Whiteness Studies, which holds that race is more important than ethnicity in America, has led to the over-representation of non-European immigrant groups like #Asians and #Latinos. The relationship between the Black and Jewish communities in the music business is complex, curious, and conflicted. Before records became popular, sheet music was the main way that popular tunes moved through the market. Jews were prominent in Tin Pan Alley, the sheet music publishing #industry, and excelled as songwriters and musicians working in a commercial, R&B style. Outside of the music business, the Black and Jewish communities experienced conflict due to social class differences. Jews were not direct competitors with the #Blackcommunity in the same way as working-class Italians and Irish. The difference in social class enabled the two groups to collaborate in the #musicindustry but also sparked tensions, such as Christian versus Jewish, Black versus White, and customer versus landlord or employee versus employer.

Authenticity in Action: Supporting Black Creativity Beyond Black History Month As the owner of a 100% Black and women-owned music publishing company with a 20-year track record of creating and licensing competitive music – Transition Music Corporation – it was disheartening to witness yet another Black History Month pass without a single project opportunity centered on our work. While I applaud the many corporations and independents who uplift Black voices and businesses during February, I believe there's room for deepening truly inclusive practices. Authentic support for Black creators and entrepreneurs extends far beyond a designated month. It's about recognizing that: - Black-owned businesses contribute to a vibrant creative industry all year round. - Our expertise and experience bring unique perspectives and value propositions. - Sustainable, equitable representation necessitates consistent and intentional inclusion. For all those committed to social consciousness and diverse representation, I pose these questions: - How can inclusion practices be actively audited to ensure Black-owned businesses have genuine opportunities? - Are Black creators and entrepreneurs integrated into creative decision-making and procurement processes beyond symbolic gestures? - If not now, when? When will we see a shift towards consistent, rather than performative, support? I invite you to consider Transition Music Corporation, and other Black-owned music companies, as you seek diverse perspectives and high-quality content throughout the entire year. Let's build a more inclusive industry where Black excellence is celebrated and supported every day. #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackOwnedBusiness #MusicIndustry #DiversityAndInclusion #Authenticity Note: Transition Music Corporation (TMC) is 100% women and black-owned, and ranks among the top 100 music publishers in the United States. TMC is the exclusive music provider for Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, 34 series. TMC creates original music and licenses music to the major studios and independents alike. TMC music can be heard in films, TV shows, and promos, resulting in more than 500,000 global annual performances.

New Post: Live Music Experts Weigh In on DOJ’s Live Nation Suit: ‘We Have an Industry to Save’ - https://lnkd.in/gx2hRTvw - Live music experts are anticipating the antitrust lawsuit brought by the U.S. Department of Justice against Live Nation to take years to resolve, given the wide scope of the claims against the concert giant and the various stakeholders in the live music ecosystem. Related Live Nation Hit With DOJ Antitrust Lawsuit: ‘It’s Time to Break It Up’ 05/23/2024 “It is going to take a couple of years, at least,” Lee Hepner, senior counsel of anti-monopoly group the American Economic Liberties Project, said at the NIVA 2024 conference in New Orleans on Tuesday (June 4). The conference is put on by the National Independent Venue Association, which formed in 2020 to secure federal funding from the government during the pandemic. The upside, for Hepner and other speakers on the panel called Ticket Tyranny: The Unseen Grip of Market Dominance, is the “massive potential in restructuring the industry.” Ant Taylor, founder and CEO of ticketing competitor Lyte, agreed on Tuesday saying, “Given how big the scope is, it is going to be challenging to see it through… What excites me about this moment is the opportunity we have as an ecosystem to look — not just at Live Nation — but to look at the way we do business together and the conditions in which Live Nation has thrived.” Specifically, Taylor added, “What’s the business model of ticketing and why, for 40 years, has there been so little innovation around it?” Ticketmaster has been a dominate force in the ticketing business for decades — its 2010 merger with Live Nation only strengthened its position in the U.S. market. The DOJ lawsuit claims that Live Nation-Ticketmaster has “unlawfully maintained monopolies in several concert promotions and primary ticketing markets and engaged in other exclusionary conduct affecting live concert venues, including arenas and amphitheaters.” A major concern for the DOJ and the group of 30 states that jointly filed the suit on May 23 is Live Nation’s “flywheel model,” which the DOJ describes as a “self-reinforcing business model that captures fees and revenue from concert fans and sponsorship, uses that revenue to lock up artists to exclusive promotion deals, and then uses its powerful cache of live content to sign venues into long term exclusive ticketing deals, thereby starting the cycle all over again.” Unlike the consent decree that Live Nation has been under since the merger, which was designed to prevent the company from abusing its position, Kevin Erickson, director of Was

Article 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights asserts our right to culture, yet in today's world, this fundamental right is increasingly under threat. Rising living costs, exacerbated by calls to #TaxTheRich, have sparked a crucial debate: can everyone truly participate in cultural experiences? Take, for instance, the growing number of canceled concerts and music festivals due to escalating operational expenses. While many arts organizations offer free programming, two critical issues emerge: Firstly, in a capitalist-driven society, nothing truly comes free, and secondly, what is the genuine connection with communities? Amidst content overload and profit-centric algorithms, many individuals are unaware of the initiatives by local nonprofits and artists. The wealth crisis significantly impacts communities' ability to access art and strains the capacity of artists and organizations to create it. As arts and culture play a pivotal role in community cohesion and individual well-being, this lack of access fundamentally undermines our humanity, especially in the wake of COVID-19's profound impact on our cultural landscape. While we celebrate and invest in global icons like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, we must also prioritize our local artists, arts workers, and organizations. They navigate not only the challenges of living costs but also the precarious nature of short-term funding cycles, often with prolonged waits for financial support. The concept of "Policy" resonates deeply here, with ideas like Universal Basic Services and Income offering potential solutions. However, regulating creativity amidst loopholes that favor the wealthy remains a complex issue. Moreover, the relentless pursuit of growth in the arts sector raises questions about sustainability and alternative markers of success beyond mere expansion. It's time to recognize arts and culture as foundational components of our society's economy and well-being. They serve people and the planet, not just corporate interests. This realization demands a collective reevaluation of what arts and culture mean to us and whether we can afford to devalue their profound impact. #Philanthropy #Economics #ArtsandCulture #Sociology
The arts are being sidelined in the cost of living crisis. It’s time we stopped framing them as a luxury

🚨 Bias Alert in Country Music: Time to Break the Gatekeeping Cycle! 🚨 Recently, Luke Bryan’s comment about Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter being snubbed at the CMA Awards exposed something much bigger than just a music debate—it reveals the deeply ingrained anti-Blackness and gatekeeping in the country music industry. Bryan's words, "come into our world and be country with us," reflect the long history of cultural exclusion. It suggests that Black artists like Beyoncé don't naturally belong in country music—a genre BUILT on Black musical traditions like blues and gospel. Yet, here we are in 2024, still seeing racial boundaries being policed, maintaining white dominance within these cultural spaces. 🌍 But this isn't just about Beyoncé—this is about systemic bias across ALL industries! We can't keep ignoring the cultural erasure and the marginalization of Black voices. Whether it's in music, tech, or the workplace, gatekeeping like this is holding us ALL back from true inclusion. 💡 So, what can we do? It’s time to break the cycle. Tools like Justice AI can help us decode bias and actively build inclusive environments, not just in music but everywhere bias exists. 👉 Want to disrupt bias and promote inclusion?
