In one example, Mark Ciolek PT, DPT, a consulting physical therapist with Pro-Activity, described a shop that was able to help a mechanic who couldn't do overhead lift work, one with back pain, and one struggling to adjust after moving to management. "This shop and their organization engaged in all aspects of a musculoskeletal health initiative," Dr. Ciolek said. Make sure their home is safe and accessible before they come home. While they're still in a facility, determine what home modifications and mobility and rehab technology this particular person needs. And don't let a contractor or medical equipment provider go on autopilot; countless claims have wasted money acquiring equipment that didn’t fit in house and making unnecessary home modifications. Adaptive housing specialists (OTs, CEACs, ATPs, ECHMs) should collaborate on a clinically sound, cost-effective solution that makes the best use of the space and medical equipment. Involve the injured worker/caretakers in the plan. Be sure they know when to expect construction workers and equipment deliveries. Keep them informed every step of the way.
