Seed Week 2024: A Journey of Growth, Learning, and Connections What an incredible 5 days it has been at Seed Week 2024! From inspiring sessions with industry leaders to hands-on workshops and collaborative activities, the week was a true testament to the power of experiential learning. We were privileged to collaborate with our esteemed partner, Atria University, alongside some of the most influential voices in the biotech and bioinformatics sectors. A heartfelt thank you to our industry experts and mentors for their invaluable insights and guidance Dr. Balasubramanya S Lalith Kishore Jagan L Shruti Singh Berty Ashley Throughout the week, students explored bioinformatics through workshops, hackathons, and reflection sessions that bridged the gap between academic knowledge and real-world applications. Each day aligned with the Hero’s Journey, taking learners through a transformative path of discovery, application, and reflection. From panel discussions on industry trends to coffee chats with CEOs, every session was designed to inspire, challenge, and prepare our learners for the future of the biotech industry. We ended on a high note with a gratitude circle, countless memories, and the promise of exciting opportunities ahead. Here's to empowering the next generation of biotech leaders! There's only 1 week left to apply to the 2025 Rice Innovation Fellows, a custom support program for PhD and Post-Doc students from Rice University School of Engineering and Computing and Rice University School of Natural Sciences to push the impact of their groundbreaking research beyond the publication and into world changing companies. The past 3 cohorts since starting the program in 2022 have now brought in ~$18M in venture capital and non-dilutive funding across climate tech, life sciences, med devices, software and many other industries. More importantly, the Liu Idea Lab for Innovation & Entrepreneurship is creating a new generation of scientists and engineers trained in the dark arts of entrepreneurship, and ready to make a lasting impact on the world. Rice Innovation Fellows have leveraged the program to get ready for being the strongest applicants for programs like Activate & Chain Reaction Innovations, prep for SBIR/STTR/PFI funding, and get on the path to landing their first pilot customers and raising their first rounds of funding. With research commercialization training, personalized mentorship, translational research funding and dedicated space on campus, the Innovation Fellows program will give you everything you need to push your research beyond the point of publication alone. If you're a Rice University PhD or Post-Doc, or know of one, who dreams of a life for your research beyond the bench, I encourage you to throw your hat in the ring --- link below in the comments 👇

Brilliant post with some useful links to learn more about data analysis! 📖
Biotechnologist and PhD in Molecular Medicine | Expert in Computational Biology, Transcriptomics and Gene Therapy
Beginnings are always tough… For scientists, the start of a career is the most vulnerable moment. We all remember our first time in the lab—for better or worse. It’s a defining phase where we figure out what kind of scientist we want to be—or if we really want to become scientists at all. This is why mentoring is crucial. ✨New students look up to their mentors, who are responsible for setting the right example. I’ve been lucky to have mentors who not only taught me good science but also showed me the right values. From them, I have learned that taking the time to develop and refine our mentoring skills is just as important as any scientific training. 🧠 We often talk about the pressures and challenges of academia, but we can improve this environment ourselves! It starts with creating a space where ideas can thrive, and quality work is valued over quantity. Here are some helpful resources that have made a difference in my career: 🔗 Intro to R and Image Analysis (Proteintech Early Career Training): Proteintech Training (https://lnkd.in/ey8jPypk ) 🔗 General Data Science and Life Sciences: DataCamp (https://www.datacamp.com) HarvardEdX (https://lnkd.in/eNuRBbes) 🔗 High-Throughput Sequencing Analysis: DESeq2 Guide (https://lnkd.in/eK9dUV9S) SCS Best Practices (https://lnkd.in/eWUnAyNe ) Bioconductor SCS Workflow (https://lnkd.in/e43G8iKA ) 🔗 Bioinformatics YouTube Channels: Bioinformagician (https://lnkd.in/e_8nDJRF) Sanbomics (https://lnkd.in/ec5vgGSn) Chatomics (https://lnkd.in/eZ4Dhr8W) 🔗 Basic Biology Refresher: MIT OpenCourseWare (https://lnkd.in/emKrbMau) I hope these resources help new scientists as much as they’ve helped me! 💬 What has been your experience with mentorship in science? Here is an achievement I cherish the most, the Ultimate Research Bootcamp. Since, I have a great passion for research, a small learning from you can make us best friends. This Bootcamp was an invaluable journey of 20 Days of learning from the Mentor M Junaid Iqbal (Ph.D. Italy) 🧬 Making Research Easy 🌼 He is an expert at unknotting complexities of research, and making it as easy as eating a 'Biryani.' It was a wonderful experience, especially for me, because it started exactly at a time when I was narrowing my topic for an upcoming research project at Women Ascension. A lucky coincidence! The sessions remained loaded with Learning materials, Live Demos + Motivational Talks Learnings: Research Methodology Topic Selection Sampling Techniques Statistical Analysis Literature Search & Writing along with using Operators for Advance Search Research Report Publications & Finding Journals Tools: EndNote Graph Pad He taught like a pro, everything for free. Isn't it too much? Well, no way to say No. I can't be thankful enough to Multiomics - Innovating The Future and the honorable Sir. I LOVE what’s happening with the interfacing of Academia and Industry. I’ve spoken about this before, but when I was in academia, it was a completely different time. There was no collaboration or crossover between them… There was no on-campus startup community. You were either a pure academic… or you went to the “dark side” into business, never to be heard from again. There was no support for walking that path. It made the early years of Excedr extremely challenging. Choosing to go the academic route was no picnic either. Consider this: To become a professor, especially one that is tenured, it’s like getting into the NBA of science. – There are only so many research institutions for life science. – There are only a finite amount of tenured seats for professorships – And there are tons and tons of brilliant grad students that are going through their graduate studies, hoping to earn one of those seats It’s a mathematically daunting equation. Not everyone can be LeBron. And that doesn’t mean they’re not extremely talented in their own right. So for the for-profit route to be so supported from inside the “nest” of academia? It’s such an amazing step forward. I’m a big proponent of the idea that the more options people have, the better it all plays out across the board. Of course, I’ve talked about a lot of this before… But whenever I’m participating with Nucleate, or most recently, at CoMotion at University of Washington and seeing a legendary professor and rockstar investor co-hosting an event… I’m overwhelmed with excitement for how cool the life sciences environment is for the founders of today and tomorrow. Can’t wait to see what the next 10 years hold…. Oliver Dodd Soufiane Aboulhouda Mandi Williams Samantha Sison Michael Retchin #lifesciences #biotechnology #academia #founders
